Hardstanding pitch with water and electric

  • Family- and dog-friendly pub site a mile from Leominster on the A44
  • A 20-minute drive from Ludlow; 25 minutes from Hereford
  • Home-cooked meals, play area and 24-hour access to facilities
If you’re the type who loves the outdoors but is also rather fond of finishing a day out with a good feed and a proper pint, then it’s likely you’ll do rather well indeed at Barons Cross Inn. This welcoming pub site is in a highly handy Herefordshire location, a mile outside of Leominster on the A44 and sitting in a sweet spot in the middle of a triangle that has the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills and the Brecon Beacons at its points. All of that means heaps of walks to be had in the vicinity, along with pretty villages to potter around (some of the best are linked on the nearby Black & White Trail driving route). Whatever you choose to do by day, you’ll surely be keen to get back to the pub, where the chef preps meals made with locally sourced ingredients (but kept at pub prices) and there’s a tempting collection of beers, ciders and wines. There's often something going on, such as quiz nights or live music, and everyone is made to feel welcome by the friendly staff. Restless kids and dogs can be entertained at the play area and the neighbouring field respectively. Guests have 24-hour access to a shower room and washing-up facilities. Breakfasts are available every day, and you’re welcome to light up a barbecue if you fancy doing your own cooking (there’s a supermarket five minutes’ walk away and a bus stop just outside the pub for easy access to shops).

What customers say

This friendly, relaxed site with a pub attached receives widespread praise for its excellent food, generous portions, and warm welcome from staff. Pitches are generally level with good spacing and electric hook-ups. While some guests noted areas needing tidying and dated facilities, management is actively working on improvements, with many guests expressing a desire to return.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Staff was friendly and welcoming, we had Sunday lunch which was very nice.

Disliked The pitches wasn't marked out properly, the grass hadn't been cut, when entering the pub, the entrance was dirty and dusty looked like it hadn't been hoovered or mopped for a long time, not a great first impressions.
There was one portaloo for the whole site, we do have a toilet in our van, but do use onsite facilities when available, I went to use the portaloo and it was disgusting, it was full to the brim with dirty toilet roll and unusable. The pub toilet although had two cubicles only one was working and available to use when the pub is open, Mon - Thursday it opens at 5pm, so if you don't have your own portaloo and the one on site is unusable, I'm not sure what you would do.
Over all this site looks unloved and run down, just seems the owners don't care about the condition and don't consider their customers that are paying for the service. This could be a really nice site if they put the work in to make it more presentable and some where that people would return to and also recommend to others, I'm really sorry but I wouldn't do either, unless there was a massive improvement.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Pitches in walking distance to the pub. The pub was lovely and had a really nice homely feel to it with excellent service. The toilets and shower were clean too.

Disliked The only slight downside was how muddy the pitches were, potentially some kind of track matting would be beneficial.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Close enough to Leominster town to be useful, and being just off the A44 makes it easy to get to other places in and around the Herefordshire/Wales boarders.

Disliked Site needs some TLC. Several upturned picnic benches in the hedges, bits of old caravan upholstery in the middle of the field and tracks/hardstandings that urgently need more scalping compacted in. The latter makes it difficult to manoeuvre the caravan, or walk around the site without getting muddy. I would suggest, that as it is, it is not useable as an off/early/late season site.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked The very friendly welcome and fantastic meal in the pub. Very dog friendly.

Disliked Alas, the weather over several weeks was against both campers and hosts. The campsite was very wet and muddy, and limited where we could walk the dog.

Liked not at all

Disliked On arrival the ground was completely unusable - waterlogged.
Parking up we would have sunk into the ground. We were unable to stay, there was no one around to speak to. The site is nothing like the pictures and we left a phone message for them to call us back and still have no reply.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Absolutely nothing

Disliked Gravel touring pitch was no such thing - a few mats which did not help. We got stuck in the mud and they would not help us as we did not have a tow bar. We eventually got ourselves out and left - not prepared to stay. They would not refund the deposit despite the blatant disparity in calling a mud bath a gravel touring site.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked We had a great stay, very welcoming.
Played pool all afternoon with the locals.
Dinner in the old part of the pub, The risotto was amazing.

Disliked Pitch a bit muddy but that is only due to the amount of wet weather this year!

Local attractions

Start with a little stroll around Leominster, a mile away – it’s a handsome market town with a grand priory and streets lined with independent shops to poke around in. For more active times, it’s also got a swimming pool and a golf course (about 10 minutes’ drive from the pub). If you’d like to take your urban wanders a little further, check out the foodies’ fave Ludlow (20 minutes’ drive) or head into Hereford (25 minutes) to see the cathedral, the Mappa Mundi exhibition and the Hereford Cider Museum. Keeping it all a little more country, venture to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (20 minutes) to get up close to the animals, wander through Westonbury Mill Water Gardens (15 minutes) or learn a little bit about cheesemaking at Monkland Cheese Dairy (five minutes). If you’re heading out for a hike, the Shropshire Hills, Malvern Hills and Brecon Beacons are all within 40 minutes’ drive.
