Bridge Inn Camping Site: Visitor image of the campsite

General

  • Riverside inn on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Nine miles from Hay-on-Wye
  • Dozens of walks starting straight from the site

A riverside inn, at the bottom of the Black Mountains, and flanked by the Brecon Beacons National Park: you might reckon there's an excellent amount of hiking and biking around Herefordshire site Bridge Inn Camping Site. You'd be entirely correct – and as it's based at a pub, refreshments after a hearty hike/bike ride will be a fine option too.

And if you don't want to hike or bike? First of all, pfffft, as this is a smashing countryside setting for both, but if your tastes do tend towards the more placid while on hol, the book-heavy town of Hay-on-Wye is a mere nine miles away for picking up many (many) volumes; and for sightseeing, cathedral city Hereford is around 15 miles from the pub.

The drinks and food at the Bridge Inn have been lauded by many traveller types, so if you're a carnivore, do tuck into their well-regarded juicy steaks… The team's pretty knowledgeable about what's on offer hikewise around the area too: check out the dozens of local walks in the pub folder to plot where you'll be off to next.

The pub provides an off-grid experience rather than a fully functioning campsite; there are pub toilets available 24/7 but there are no showers on site.

Lovely quiet field with only space for 8 pitches, next to a pub by a stream, although we were right next to a country lane.
Good situation for walking from, beautiful countryside.

    Disliked:

The toilets and showers were not very clean and toilet paper was not replenished regularly. I think the owner of the pub may have been away and left young people in charge!
Barely any phone signal or wifi signal at the campsite.

Lovely spot stayed on motorhome pitches - very peaceful even on a bank holiday weekend.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike but just be aware pub closed on a Monday if you are planning to eat there. Also camping facilities and business are separate to the pub so only contact through Pitch Up. No chemical waste point.

Hated it it was a pub car park came home after 1 night stay.

    Disliked:

All of it ,was advertised as touring and camping , wasn’t a site for a caravan, on arrival got lost so we telephoned, to get directions the lady we spoke to said it wasn’t for caravans , more for tents and we said did it have electric hook up she said yes , so finally on arrival couldn’t believe it was pub car park.

From the manager...

It is advertised as a caravan and tent campsite. There is nothing deceptive about our description. Please see the other comments which mention the beauty, tranquility and peacefulness of our site… I’m not sure quite what you were expecting but clearly this was not the site for you!

Perfect camping area, secluded and peaceful. New and spacious showers with ample power.
Wonderful quinticencial country pub, with well thought out menu.
We were bikepacking. We will be back.

    Disliked:

No access to WiFi because of insufficient bandwidth in rural location. No 4G.
However, you may just want to get away from it all.

Location was beautiful. Right next to a stream and very peaceful. Nothing for miles around and no WIFI which some may not be happy with but was a real treat!

The Bridge Inn is a lovely pub with outside area again next to the stream.

There are chickens roaming around - always trying to get in the van!

New toilet and shower block on site.

    Disliked:

Showers were cold by the 2nd day - I think it is just teething problems with the boiler maybe.

Local attractions

Walks, walks and yet more English and Welsh walks… dozens to pick from start straight from the pub, like the handsome route to Hay-on-Wye nine miles away, to have a wander around the bookshops before tottering back with to base with a rucksack full of reading material. The Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park, both edging the site, also have enough hikes of all lengths to keep you out of mischief for weeks.

Abergavenny, the Monmouthshire town promoted as one of the 'gateway to Wales', is 10 miles from Bridge Inn Camping Site and has many more hiking options as the Marches Way, Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all pass through it (if these just aren't enough walking for you, the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path is nearby).

Abergavenny dates back to Roman times and has many old buildings and ruins to see; for more ancientness, county capital Hereford is 15 miles from the pub and has a fine 11th-century cathedral, home to the splendidly eccentric medieval depiction of the world in the Mappa Mundi.
