Bridge Inn Camping Site: The campsite with the river on the left which backs onto the hard-standing sites.

General

  • Riverside inn on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Nine miles from Hay-on-Wye
  • Dozens of walks starting straight from the site

A riverside inn, at the bottom of the Black Mountains, and flanked by the Brecon Beacons National Park: you might reckon there's a topping amount of hiking and biking around Herefordshire site Bridge Inn Camping Site. You'd be entirely correct – and as it's based at a pub, tipples and vittles after a hearty hike/bike ride will be a tiptop option too.

And if you don't want to hike or bike? First of all, pfffft, as this is a smashing countryside setting for both, but if your tastes do tend towards the more placid while on hol, the tome-heavy town of Hay-on-Wye is a mere nine miles away for picking up many (many) volumes; and for sightseeing, cathedral city Hereford is around 15 miles from the pub.

The tipples and vittles at the Bridge Inn have been lauded by many traveller types, so if you're a carnivore, do tuck into their well-regarded juicy steaks… The team's pretty knowledgeable about what's on offer hikewise around the area too: check out the dozens of local walks in the pub folder to plot where you'll be off to next.

Facilities on site include toilets and showers as well as a washing-up area.

Excellent location behind the pub with the river running alongside. Dog friendly, back to basics site, with interesting walks from the door. Basic but spotless toilet & shower room, with hot and cold taps outside for washing up and filling bottles. Good pub food and friendly staff. Awesome Gin & Rum distillery very close by.

    Disliked:

Very cold toilet & shower room. Could do with a little updating.

Everything. Great pub with good food. Magical surroundings on the river bank with free ranging chickens and ducks. Outside wood fired pizza oven. Brilliant atmosphere and extremely accommodating staff. Loved it and will definitely go back.

    Disliked:

No phone signal but staff kindly gave me use if the pub phone.
Also no internet access which was fine with me but may not be for everyone.

Absolutely great location to get away from it all with stunning walks so close by. The pub is just great and the chef running the restaurant blew all expectations away. The staff in the pub are all great and the land lady is so friendly!

    Disliked:

The campsite could do with some solar lights around the border maybe, other than that I can’t think of anything. Loved our stay here. Not a dislike, but a warning, there’s no phone signal so download routes for walks before hand.

loved the location if you want idyllic this is the place for you, a great welcome site after driving down miles of narrow lanes! The site itself is basic but all you need is on site with very helpful staff on hand. Only a few pitches but well spaced and despite being in the far side of the pub car park, backing onto a nice river and fields, noise was minimal. Bonus on this site was the traditional pub with a good selection of drinks and very good food. Highly recommended!

    Disliked:

only downside was due to basic facilities the shower had an unsavoury amount of insect and bug life in the air and emerging from drain, maybe needs sorting.

Attached to a pub so access to restaurant and take away pizza, very obliging staff, facilities basic but adequate small site and very quiet when we were there, pub guests quiet as both the pub and the site are very out of the way. B & B close by which we needed for our group.
Pitches right on the banks of the river in a lovely green valley with views of the Black Mountains.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but if you want more than a good place to walk and cycle from in a beautiful part of the world don't go here.

Local attractions

Walks, walks and yet more English and Welsh walks… dozens to pick from start straight from the pub, like the handsome route to Hay-on-Wye nine miles away, to have a wander around the bookshops before tottering back with to base with a rucksack full of tomes. The Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park, both edging the site, also have enough hikes of all lengths to keep you out of mischief for weeks.

Abergavenny, the Monmouthshire town promoted as one of the 'gateway to Wales', is ten miles from Bridge Inn Camping Site and has many more hiking options as the Marches Way, Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all pass through it (if these just aren't enough walking for you, the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path is nearby).

Abergavenny dates back to Roman times and has many old buildings and ruins to see; for more ancientness, county capital Hereford is 15 miles from the pub and has a fine eleventh-century cathedral, home to the splendidly eccentric medieval depiction of the world in the Mappa Mundi.
