  • Peaceful Cotswolds site in the grounds of Westonbirt House
  • Walking distance from Westonbirt, The National Arboretum and a pub
  • Golf course, tennis courts and kids’ club on site
Crafting a cheery Cotswolds itinerary? Then, you may want to set down at Westonbirt School, surrounded by 210 acres of Victorian architecture, parklands and landscaped gardens. A 35-minute drive away from Bath and on the grounds of Westonbirt House, this family-friendly site is a peaceful (and rather grand) alcove in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Which, first? A game of golf or a tennis match? Well, perhaps try and fit both in, as this site has access to a nine-hole golf course and tennis courts. Those of you with little ones tagging along may be pleased to hear that there are holiday camps throughout the summer that kids can be booked on to (additional charge and subject to availability). And with Westonbirt, The National Arboretum 20 minutes’ walk away, they'll be well-set for a treetop adventure walk through the canopies of the tree garden or a hunt for the Gruffalo on the family-friendly trail. If you’re yearning for a good meal out after all the day's activities, there’s a pub at the end of the drive (two minutes' drive away), and many more places to dine out in Tetbury. This town is 10 minutes’ drive away and rather ripe grounds for antique, vintage and boutique shopping in the day.

Local attractions

Lace up your walking boots… if you have an active break in mind, the riverside Thames Path (20 minutes’ drive) runs through Kemble and continues past meadows and rural historic towns. Or, if you’re looking for a shorter trail suited to littler feet, there are 700 acres and many footpaths around the site of a Tudor hunting lodge at National Trust’s Newark Park (20 minutes). From Roman baths and spas to museums, historic bridges and the vista of the Royal Crescent, Bath (35 minutes) has many a historic outing on the cards. However, there are still plenty of old sites to see outside the city too, including Berkeley Castle (half an hour) and its family-friendly wooded play area, climbing wall and dragon trail or Charlton Park House (20 minutes), a mansion with scenic parkland, fly fishing, shooting and horse riding. If you’re looking for activities that will make more of a splash, Cotswold Country Park & Beach (25 minutes) runs watersports such as paddleboarding and kayaking - not forgetting the inflatable aqua park. For something a little easier going, there are also pedalos or a sandy beach for a play.
