Woodcock Farm: Bell tent

General

  • Peaceful glamping site on a Gloucestershire working farm
  • Secluded woodland on the edge of the Cotswolds
  • A 30-minute drive from Bath and Bristol

In need of a private getaway? That’s exactly what’s in store with a stay at Woodcock Farm on the edge of the Cotswolds, a 10-minute drive from Chipping Sodbury and 30 minutes from Bath and Bristol. The site may be close to civilisation but, on the southern edge of a 36-acre farm, it still feels like an escape from the world – sink into that feeling with rambling walks through the private woodlands and up to the Iron Age hill fort on site.

Beyond the site, this area is fabulous for walkers and cyclists. The 102-mile-long Cotswold Way National Trail passes right by Woodcock – following the Cotswold Edge, the trail continues to Bath in one direction and all the way to Chipping Campden in the other, taking in spectacular views and villages along the way.

Worked up an appetite? The glamping options available here have their own camp kitchen with a barbecue, sink, cooking utensils, a table and chairs, tableware, glassware and a coolbox or mini fridge, so you're set up for making your own meals. If holidays to you mean a break from cooking, grab a bite at one of the restaurants in Chipping Sodbury. The town is also home to shops and a bakery, so stock up on supplies while you’re there.

Woodcock Farm is a haven for the environmentally conscious: the site is off-grid and keeps things green with a composting toilet and solar shower.

We stayed in the geodome with our 3 boys (aged 5,3 and under 1). The kids absolutely loved it! Just enough luxury for it not to be camping - small outdoor kitchen with electric plug, gas bbq, gas hob, washing up sink, table and chairs with umbrella; proper beds; all cooking equipment. Separate little toilet block with electric shower. Dome was situated right in the farmyard but tucked away to give privacy on a little lawned area. Lovely and safe for the kids to run around and kick a ball around. Great location close to attractions - we went to Westonbirt Arboretum and the Wild Place Project - both were fabulous days out! The hosts advised us that there are lots of walks from the site to the local pubs etc but maybe better for bigger legs! Wood burner in the tent which we used on the second night as was a little chilly and it made the tent so lovely and cosy.
I am not a fan of camping but I had such a lovely time, we would definitely do it again!

    Disliked:

Maybe would have been nice if the transparent part of the dome was pointing at something a little more scenic as it is currently positioned facing the fence on the farm track.

Noisy, soft bed, slugs everywhere in tent, eco toilet not emptied often enough

From the manager...

We were so sorry to hear this. I'm sorry you didn't mentioned these issues to us whilst you were here, as we are on site everyday and would have tried to solve any problems you were having.
We do empty the composting toilet daily, which we have always found sufficient, but we can always increase this if required.
I am sorry about any noise, usually the farm and field area is very quiet, but I know the local farmer was harvesting around that time, so again, I am sorry you were disturbed.

We loved everything about our stay, Caroline and Jason were so lovely and there was everything there we could possibly have needed. The kids loved feeding the pigs every day. There is a beautiful walk that leads to the cotswold way, in the morning we saw deer leaping through the wheat field. Just lovely. The breakfast basket is well worth getting it was delicious and there is a Waitrose 10 minutes drive away and the cross hands pub just 2 mins away was family friendly and does amazing food.

Timberdoodle is an incredibly spacious, well equipped tent which easily accommodated 2 adults and 2 teenagers. The tent is close by the stables so lots of lovely horse neighbours to admire! The facilities are great, a camp kitchen with gas bbq and electric cool box made food preparation easy, although the awful weather stopped us making as much use as we would like of these! The toilet and shower were super clean despite being a compost toilet! Lovely not to have to share these. Jason and Caroline are wonderful hosts, on call to deal with any questions or issues and are really friendly and genuinely happy to help.

We loved our stay on Woodcock farm. The hosts were so welcoming and friendly and the view from the tent was stunning. Our daughter loved exploring the woodland and greeting all the animals down on the farm. The location is close to lots of good cities for day trips. We would love to stay here again!

Local attractions

You can’t stay this close to Bath and not pay a visit to the stunning place. It’s known for its looks as much as anything and sightseeing tours should bring you to all the hotspots, but if you’re looking to dive head first into the city's history, check out the exhibitions at the Roman Baths, empty your wallet at the shop-lined Pulteney Bridge or rub elbows with the Georgian glitterati at the Assembly Rooms.

The opulent history of this part of the Cotswolds isn’t just confined to Bath – pretend you’re a Jane Austen hero or heroine at the spectacular National Trust houses that dot the area. Horton Court, Dyrham Park and Newark Park are all within 25 minutes’ drive of Woodcock Farm.

Want to get some shots for the ‘Gram? Pay a visit to Castle Combe, less than 20 minutes’ drive from the site – the village almost seems lost in time and feels purpose built for moody photos. Movie fans might recognise it from the 1960s musical Doctor Dolittle and the more recent Stardust and War Horse.

If the kids are tiring of history, bring them to Bristol Zoo or the Cotswold Water Park, both within 40 minutes’ drive of Woodcock, or take a trip on the Strawberry Line Miniature Railway, 25 minutes from the site.
