  • Shepherd’s huts in an orchard just outside Huntley, in Gloucestershire
  • Gloucester 20 minutes’ drive; Forest of Dean 25 minutes
  • Private patios; communal barbecue hut; resident farm animals
Imagine waking up to a lively dawn chorus in the middle of a blossoming orchard… Sounds dreamy, right? Well, all this (and more) can be yours to experience at Prestbury Farm Shepherd Huts, a splendid site on a Gloucestershire farm less than a five-minute drive from the A40 and the village of Huntley, with two pubs and a petrol station with a small shop for essentials. Accommodation is in traditionally crafted shepherd’s huts; they are located at either end of the orchard, so if you value your privacy, you can just sit on your fenced-off patio, unwind and enjoy the peace and quiet, broken only by the occasional bleating of the resident sheep or the hooting of the owls. On the other hand, if you’re in the mood to socialise, the communal barbecue hut can easily accommodate all the site’s residents – and with plenty of room to spare. (Still feeling private? Don’t worry: each hut comes with its own barbecue facilities. Oh, and barbecue coals can be purchased on site.) But back to those self-contained huts… In addition to a comfortable double bed, dining table and cooking facilities (including kettle, toaster, pots and pans, and fridge freezer), there’s a woodburner for cosy, toasty evenings in. A basket of wood is included in your stay (and more is available to purchase): this is part of a welcome package that also features tea, coffee, hot chocolate and fresh milk, plus a birdwatching kit with binoculars and identifying cards. A separate shepherd’s hut houses the site’s bathroom facilities, with a private shower and toilet, plus a shared utility area with hot running water and places to wash up.

Local attractions

Renowned for its elegant cloister (which appears in several Harry Potter films), the medieval cathedral in Gloucester (20 minutes’ drive) combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. The city is also England’s most inland port. The Victorian warehouses lining its historic docks are home to shops and cafés, plus the National Waterways Museum. In addition to a woodland Sculpture Trail, the Forest of Dean (25 minutes) has hiking areas, cycling parks and attractions for the entire family. These include Puzzlewood, an enchanting forested landscape with trails, moss-covered rocks and assorted wildlife; the Perrygrove Railway Adventure, a miniature steam-train ride; and treetop adventures at Go Ape Beechenhurst. At Symonds Yat (35 minutes), woodland walks lead to picnic areas or overlooks like Symonds Yat Rock, where you can admire the Wye Valley and the birds of prey that nest in the vertiginous cliffs. Or you can take in the views from a canoe as you paddle down the Wye.
