  • Fifteenth-century traditional riverside pub
  • Rural setting overlooking the River Severn
  • Well placed for the Cotswolds, Cheltenham, Worcester and Malvern

Who's up for a historical haven in a riverside setting? With – hurrah – free fishing, canoe launch and an inn on site going all the way back to ye olde fifteenth century? Come and have a stay at Gloucestershire's The Lower Lode on the banks of the Severn.

The setting of this site is smashing if you're of a historical bent: it's close to the handsome and medieval town of Tewkesbury, which you can access by the old foot ferry from Wednesday to Sunday, and from here it's a cinch to get to other old English spots like Gloucester (and old cathedral), Worcester (ditto) and Cheltenham (horses). Malvern and the Cotswolds are within easy reach for hikes and strolls.

Pitches here are in the grounds of the Lower Lode Inn, a family-run and traditional pub dishing up locally sourced home-cooked food and real ales among a friendly vibe. (Breakfasts and Sunday carvery are also available by booking at the bar.) The inn has a games room with pool table and jukebox, and, as befits such a scenic setting, a riverside beer garden with plenty of garden seating for alfresco eats and drinks.

The site has an Elsan disposal point and drinking water taps. Showers and toilets are in the main building and accessible 24/7; there's also an outdoor basic mobile shower and toilet unit near the pitching field.

And those free activities? Try some Severn river angling gratis from here, or launch your dinghy or canoe from the Lower Lode slipway.
