  • Fifteenth-century traditional riverside pub
  • Rural setting overlooking the River Severn
  • Well placed for the Cotswolds, Cheltenham, Worcester and Malvern
Who's up for a historical haven in a riverside setting? With – hurrah – fishing, canoe launch and an inn on site going all the way back to ye olde 15th century? Come and have a stay at Gloucestershire's The Lower Lode on the banks of the Severn. The setting of this site is smashing if you're of a historical bent: it's close to the handsome and medieval town of Tewkesbury, which you can access by the old foot ferry from Wednesday to Sunday, and from here it's a cinch to get to other old English spots like Gloucester (and old cathedral), Worcester (ditto) and Cheltenham (horses). Malvern and the Cotswolds are within easy reach for hikes and strolls. Pitches here are in the grounds of the Lower Lode Inn, a family-run and traditional pub dishing up locally sourced home-cooked food and real ales among a friendly vibe. (Breakfasts and Sunday carvery are also available by booking at the bar.) The inn has a games room with pool table and jukebox, and, as befits such a scenic setting, a riverside beer garden with plenty of garden seating for alfresco eats and drinks. The site has an Elsan disposal point and drinking water taps. Showers and toilets are in the main building and accessible 24/7; there's also an outdoor basic mobile shower and toilet unit near the pitching field. And those river-based activities? Try some Severn river angling from here (pay for a day permit at the inn), or launch your dinghy or canoe from the Lower Lode slipway.

Local attractions

Take the foot ferry or drive the few miles to medieval Tewkesbury and its half-timbered buildings, many narrow alleyways and Norman abbey. More modernly, the town also has a good range of speciality shops, antique shops, tearooms, cafés, pubs and restaurants. If you want to get out into the countryside, miles of trails, lanes, riverside walks and cycle paths surround Tewkesbury, or you could travel on to the nearby village of Twyning to launch a boat dramatically onto the Avon. More hikes are easily found in the Lower Lode surroundings of the Malvern and Cotswolds hills, or around the river valley countryside of the Severn Vale. Upton upon Severn is close to here too – home of jazz and blues festivals in the summer – and you'll be within east driving distance of a few splendidly old and attraction-filled cities: Cheltenham, with racecourse, Regency architecture galore and William Morris-inspired art, jewellery and furniture at the town's art gallery and museum; Gloucester, with seventh-century cathedral (used in three of the Harry Potter films, wizard fans), and Worcester, home of a 12th-century cathedral; the final defeat of Charles the First, and a rather tasty sauce.
