General

  • Spacious family-owned site in the Cotswolds
  • Five minutes' drive from Cirencester and 25 from Cheltenham
  • A 15-minute drive from Bibury and the start of the Thames Path

A getaway full of fab scenery, peaceful wanders and historical streetscapes… and all the dog along for the journey? It’s a cinch at Mayfield Park, a family-friendly and family-owned Gloucestershire site five minutes’ drive from the market town of Cirencester and the pretty village of Bibury.

This is a top spot to use as a base for explores of the spectacular Cotswolds. Overlooking the Churn valley, the site has easy access to plenty of local walks and scenic villages – just ask in reception for recommendations – and the long-distance Thames Path (it’ll take ramblers all the way to London) starts about 15 minutes’ drive away for lengthy treks.

Exploring without needing to use feet or pedals is simple round here too: the bus route for Cirencester and Cheltenham passes the site and there’s a stop about 100 feet from the entrance; otherwise pile everyone into the car for the five-minute ride to Cirencester and the 25-minute canter to Cheltenham.

Be sure to head back to the site as the evening closes in to catch the sun setting over the fields and settle in for an evening of barbecues as canine pals stretch out in the grass. Want a break from cooking? Sniff out one of the local pubs serving local eats to get a taste of Gloucestershire.

  • Liked:

General location was great (short drive to Cirencester, Gloucester and several Cotswold Gems), staff was super friendly, brilliant for dog owners.
Site was brilliantly maintained and superbly landscaped.
We booked a fully serviced pitch which was very good value for money.
    Modern security systems in place.
Spacious site with decent views and the perfect spot for star gazing.
The facilities have a safe ome way system in place during the current pandenic.
We cannot comment on the facilities, as we only used our caravan.
Map and leaflet we got given when we arrived was very good and accurate.

    Disliked:

The nearby main road cause a lot of noise, day and night, which did not bother us in the caravan, but it could possibly be a bit annoying in a tent.

There is a nice play area for children, but sadly just a bare, fenced area. No play ground/ swing/ slide.

As most councils recycle differently, it would have been nice to have local recycling guidance. The recycling bins have not even got signage, so we had to figure out what goes where by looking through the bins and then picking ours apart :P

Pitch was serviced, flat and spacious. Toilet block was very clean and COVID measures in place and clear. Campsite entrance was easy to find on arrival and security good. Number plate recognition operated barrier.

    Disliked:

There was a lot of road noise from a nearby main road which continued all night. This detracted from the otherwise rural location. The campsite was nearly empty but the small toilet block would be inadequate for the peak season. Many of the empty grass pitches had significant slope.

What a lovely site! myself and partner have just got back from this site and would 100% return again on our next visit to the Cotswold's! The site was well maintained and very clean! Including the toilet block which is always a big worry when booking any site! Lovely people running it that where very helpful when it came to looking for places with the dog and lots of information on the local area from them!

Local attractions

With Cheltenham racecourse a mere 30 minutes’ drive away, this site is a prime pick for horsey-types – but if the gee-gees don’t have the family galloping for joy, there are other four-legged, fleet and feathered options at the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, also half an hour from base.

If the Cotswold Gardens grow enthusiasm for stately houses and grand designs, there’s plenty else hereabouts to entice: Chavenage House, Berkeley Castle, Bowood House, Sudeley Castle, Newark Park and Dyrham Park are all within an hour for old piles, and Westonbirt Arboretum and the gardens at Highgrove (Charlie and Camilla’s royal digs) are definitely worth a turn half an hour away.

For more urban explores, start 15 minutes from the site in the scenic village of Bibury to have a poke around the Chedworth Roman Villa, travel on to Bourton-on-the-Water (20 minutes) for Birdland, a maze, a motoring museum and a model village, then take things up a notch in Cirencester, where there are Roman remains, museums, markets, parks and a manor house all waiting for visitors.

Keep things soothingly low-key with a spin on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway, 25 minutes away, or get a bit more active with watersports, paintball, fishing and horse riding at Cotswold Water Park or an adrenaline-fuelled day at the Gloucestershire Rally School, both within 20 minutes.

Must see

  • Painswick Rococo Garden (10.2 miles)
  • Sudeley Castle Gardens and Exhibition (13.9 miles)
  • Gloucester Quays (14.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Chedworth Roman Villa (5.5 miles)
  • Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate (8.8 miles)
