Mayfield Park: Lots of greenery

General

  • Spacious family-owned site in the Cotswolds
  • Five minutes' drive from Cirencester and 25 from Cheltenham
  • A 15-minute drive from Bibury and the start of the Thames Path

A getaway full of fab scenery, peaceful wanders and historical streetscapes… and bringing the dog along for the journey? It’s a cinch at Mayfield Park, a family-friendly and family-owned Gloucestershire site five minutes’ drive from the market town of Cirencester and the pretty village of Bibury.

This is a top spot to use as a base for explores of the spectacular Cotswolds. Overlooking the Churn valley, the site has easy access to plenty of local walks and scenic villages – just ask in reception for recommendations – and the long-distance Thames Path (so long it’ll take ramblers all the way to London) starts about 15 minutes’ drive away for lengthy treks.

Exploring without needing to use feet or pedals is simple round here too: the bus route for Cirencester and Cheltenham passes the site and there’s a stop about 100 feet from the entrance; otherwise pile everyone into the car for the five-minute ride to Cirencester or the 25-minute canter to Cheltenham.

Be sure to head back to the site in time to catch the sun setting over the fields, then settle in for an evening of barbecues as canine pals stretch out in the grass. Want a break from cooking? Sniff out one of the local pubs serving local eats to get a taste of Gloucestershire.

The site was kept very clean and tidy and the toilet/shower facilities were spotlessly clean, and warm. We would recommend this site to anyone and would definitely come back if in the area again.

    Disliked:

It was slightly irritating having to get out of the vehicle, at the barrier, each time we came in and out and press a call button an wait for someone to open the barrier, however we were told that there is normally a number recognition system but that was not working at this time.
We couldn't find a water supply with a hosepipe to fill up our water tank in the motorhome but not sure if we were just missing it somewhere.

    The toilet block was clean

    Disliked:

Awfully noisy site, very loud road noise and someone kept driving around on what sounded like a noisy quad bike.there is a lack of toilets and showers, only one small block and no where near pitches.
We had a dog and when there was just us left they decided to have fireworks on 8th Nov without having the common courtesy to tell us when they knew we had a dog, we had to come home a day early as the dog was so scared and distressed we couldn't settle her, it was heart breaking to see her like this, I might add the pitch they allocated us was so muddy we couldn't pitch on it, we were offered a hard standing pitch but would have to pay an extra £4 per night when they couldn't give what they sold us, we ended up pitching on the pitch next to our allocated one, sadly this is not a site we would ever re visit!

Local attractions

With Cheltenham racecourse a mere 30 minutes’ drive away, this site is a prime pick for horsey types – but if the gee-gees don’t have the family galloping for joy, there are other four-legged, fleet and feathered options at the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, also half an hour from base.

If the Cotswold Gardens grow enthusiasm for stately houses and grand designs, there’s plenty else hereabouts to entice: Chavenage House, Berkeley Castle, Bowood House, Sudeley Castle, Newark Park and Dyrham Park are all within an hour for old piles, and Westonbirt Arboretum and the gardens at Highgrove (Charlie and Camilla’s royal digs) are definitely worth a turn half an hour away.

For more urban explores, start 15 minutes from the site in the scenic village of Bibury to have a poke around the Chedworth Roman Villa, travel on to Bourton-on-the-Water (20 minutes) for Birdland, a maze, a motoring museum and a model village, then take things up a notch in Cirencester, where there are Roman remains, museums, markets, parks and a manor house all waiting for visitors.

Keep things soothingly low-key with a spin on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway, 25 minutes away, or get a bit more active with watersports, paintball, fishing and horse riding at Cotswold Water Park or an adrenaline-fuelled day at the Gloucestershire Rally School, both within 20 minutes.

Must see

  • Painswick Rococo Garden (10.2 miles)
  • Sudeley Castle Gardens and Exhibition (13.9 miles)
  • Gloucester Quays (14.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Chedworth Roman Villa (5.5 miles)
  • Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate (8.8 miles)
