Looking for an outdoorsy sort of break, with lots of walking involved and hopefully a few luxurious touches? Glamping at Ashbourne Park in Derbyshire has got you covered on both bases. Pre-erected bell tents, kitted out with proper beds and lots of wicker storage space, plus easy access to all the footpaths of the Peak District National Park: one active glamping holiday sorted. If the kids are coming with you, there’s a handy play area for them to run off energy, a wildlife pond to explore and lots of peaceful nooks and crannies for picnics on sunny days. Other family-friendly touches include a separate shower block, a launderette and a washing-up area to keep everyone and everything looking their best. You can cook up a feast on the barbecue – keep foodie stuff chilled in your personal ice box – and eat alfresco, accompanied by glorious sunsets on summer days. Pick up supplies in Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive), which is also home to a fair few pubs and cafés if you fancy a change from cooking.

Local attractions

Don't forget your walking boots, as you’ll need them to explore all the footpaths and trails in the Peak District National Park. You can hike up the limestone crag at Thorpe Cloud (20 minutes’ drive), walk a section of the Pennine Way from Edale (an hour) or try the gentle walks to Dovedale stepping stones (20 minutes) if you’ve got children in tow. Other clever ideas for family days out include the adrenaline rides and animal encounters at Gulliver’s Kingdom and a cable-car trip up the Heights of Abraham (both 20 minutes) for cave tours. Can’t get enough of theme parks? Alton Towers Resort (25 minutes) will surely keep everybody happy for the day, with its waterpark, rollercoasters and carousels for toddlers. Keen to get some culture into the holiday mix? Head for Chatsworth House (35 minutes) for tours of lavishly finished interiors, a potter around the sculpture garden and rural Peak District views. The grand, 18th-century Kedleston Hall (15 minutes) offers up elegant Robert Adam rooms and there are outdoor films showings and theatre events during the summer.

Deluxe bell tent

Liked: The tent was much bigger than we thought it was going to be and the furnishings made it seem like a cosy home. The kids had a safe park very close.

Disliked: Just seems to be lacking in a few things/finishing touches like the bed were made but duvets not put in the duvet covers properly, one of our single bed frame was bent. No sharp knife but we had a chopping board and only one gas canister for the cooker, we ran out for the last day unfortunately. No plug socket to rent never mind use in the common utility area for a hairdryer etc however nice to see an iron and board on a meter but at least its available. The shower blocks are in need of attention and a good clean!

Deluxe bell tent

Liked: Great first experience glamping. Tent was well equipped, super warm duvets. Lovely and quiet area, great to have the play equipment for the kids.

Disliked: As first timers we didn’t know what to take. The website isn’t clear so we duplicated a lot of items that were already on site.
