Crowdecote Campsite: Taken Jun 2021 showing non-eleftric pitches and one of the entrances

General

  • Peaceful and sheltered adults-only site set on a working farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Buxton; Bakewell 20 minutes
  • A few minutes' walk from a traditional country pub and the river Dove

Crowdecote Campsite is a peaceful farm site deep in the Peak District National Park. This adults-only site is small in size but big on rural views – green fields, trees and hills are all around, and local beauty spots like the river Dove, Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill are all within comfortable walking distance.

Facilities on site are low-key so as not to detract from these peaceful surrounds, but essentials like a toilet, shower, running water and a chemical disposal point are all provided (the shower has hot water but please note there's no hot water elsewhere). This rural spot is also home to a herd of friendly cattle and their pygmy goat pals Kenny and Dave, all of whom can be seen in fields by the site.

Dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on a lead and under control – this is a working farm, after all. Firepit are also welcome, and firewood is available to purchase on site. You'll need to keep all fires/barbecues in a steel container/firepit that's raised off the ground though (please don't light fires on the ground or try to construct a firepit out of stones).

Looking for something to make that view even nicer? A friendly country pub is a short walk away from Crowdecote Campsite. A handy local bus service that runs from Buxton to Ashbourne stops just opposite the pub, so you won't necessarily need a car if you've headed here in search of hill walks (and you can also head straight out to Dragon's Back or Chrome Hill on a footpath from the site). The next village over is Longor (just over a mile away), where there's a café, bar and well-liked local chip shop.

Please note

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

To create a natural environment, this site is all grass. Campervans, motorhomes and caravans larger than 5 metres in length and 2 metres wide are accepted, but may require assistance when entering/leaving. If you are booking a larger vehicle please prepare for this and let the site know in advance.

    Disliked:

The shower was a bit hard to get the right temperature (too hot for a couple of seconds and then cold)

From the manager...

Hi Giulio

Thankyou for taking the time to leave us a kind review.

Regards the shower, I'd just like to clarify that there is no fault on the shower. I've found that some guests are turning them up too high. The temperature change when altering the knob isn't instantaneous.

If you set it at about 6-7 it works just fine.

However, I've noticed a few times that some guests have left the shower turned up to max temperature. This will cause the shower to get too hot and results in the thermal cut out operating. This then turns the heat element off. The shower then runs unheated water for about 15 seconds before the thermal cut out resets and the whole process repeats itself. This is the hot and cold that you're referring to. Just turn it down a bit, wait 15-20 seconds and it'll work just fine.

Kind Regards

Steve@CC

Steve, legend. The strength of Steve's replies to some of the baseless, devoid of any substance reviews on here was enough to make me book. In fact, you could make them into a book. Pure comedy gold and he's not wrong. The campsite does exactly what it says on the tin, so what more do you want?

We walked the bridal path to the Chedder Cheese pub, where you can challenge another legendary Steve with a pony tail, the local pool shark to a game of pool and young Sam the local hotshot is lethal on the arrows. Look forward to seeing him lining up on the oche at Alexandra Palace soon. Try a pint or 10 of Unicorn a lovely drop and fish and chips next door.

Drag yourself to Dragons Back, the most spectacular views in the Peaks.

Tho, it has only just opened the facility it has a long way to go for people CAMPING.
Only one toilet in each block (men and woman) in the nearest block next to the field. Also, No hot water in the basins, and the outside washing up sink…

From the manager...

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review Sarah.

I think you might be getting a bit carried away by informing potential guests that we've "got a long way to go for people camping".

Every week we have multiple return guests. Would people be coming back time after time if we "had a long way to go" with the site and facilities? You haven't even said here that anything has inconvenienced you, just moaned while providing no real feedback.

I mean.... thankyou for confirming that we provide what we say we do? Maybe.... Thankyou for your speculation about how you feel someone else might experience the site if their situation was different to yours and if they hadn't read the site description?
One of the worst types of reviewer "Everything was fine and as described but....".

Hot Water

We say we don't supply hot water other than to the showers and have displayed this in the site listing quite prominently. If you've booked despite this and complained then, unfortunately, you're a dumpling.

Toilets and Showers

We say what we supply and show them as they are in the site gallery. Nothing is over sold. Its absolutely fine for the vast majority. Queueing is rare, isolated to busier times and not usually more than one person waiting. We have a 3rd WC which, by your wording, you obviously knew about but didn't bother to mention. That speaks volumes!

You were in a 7m motorhome on an EHU during your visit Sarah. On the cheapest EHU pitch in the Peak District for a large Tourer! None of the things that you've 'disliked' should have inconvenienced you in the slightest. Your dislikes seem to be pure speculation about how you feel someone else might experience the site. Most people who do actually camp find everything absolutely fine and appreciate that there's still good simple sites around that provide the basics to a good standard and for a good price.

I appreciate your opinion, but your opinion is that you feel you'd want more IF you were camping. My opinion is that you would certainly get that IF you paid a higher rate at a more commercial site.

Kind Regards

Steve@CC
