  • Well-kept site, family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers
Pigs, ponies and proximity to Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills Farm Campsite. This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from kiddie heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly holiday by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from your pitch.) Kids should be enthusiastically entertained by the chance to pet and give treats to the Middlehills pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings. Facilities at Middlehills Farm include a toilet and shower block (showers are subject to an extra charge, so remember to bring some coins along), two chemical waste points and two washing-up areas with a fridge-freezer each. Schedule pizza night for Friday and Saturday evenings, as this is when the site opens up its pizza van. There is also a small shop selling local produce from the farm shop in Bakewell, fresh milk and bread from the dairy and cheese from Hartington, along with snacks, basic camping equipment and briquettes and starter packs.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked It was a lovely campsite situated in a very nice, convenient area. The facilities were spot on with great views. It was generally very peaceful and the pizza van was a very nice addition too. The check in process was very quick and easy. It felt a safe campsite, all of the staff were extremely friendly and we would definitely return.

Disliked While the site itself was brilliant with great facilities and very friendly staff, unfortunately our experience was impacted by a noisy group pitched next to us. Despite the site’s clear policy of no single sex groups over four people and no music after 10:30pm, the group (seven young lads) played loud music and were shouting well past midnight. We reported this to the on-site security just after midnight, who did respond and spoke to them, but the noise continued. We also called reception around 12:30am, and someone did come down again, but unfortunately the disruption carried on until around 1am. It was a real shame, as it made it hard to sleep and took away from what would otherwise have been a fantastic stay.

From the manager: Hi, Thankyou for your review. This group caused us no problems at all and they were asked to turn their music off at 10.30pm which they did. You spoke to security who asked them to keep it down which again they did. You called the house and my husband went out and said all they were doing was talking, not loud, just sat round chatting so left them too it. Unfortunately we cannot ask people to not talk and be in bed by 10.30pm, and I'm sorry that they disturbed you, its very hard to please everyone and of course if they were being loud and playing music we would have stopped them but in this case that simply wasn't the case.
I do hope you return again.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We absolutely loved our stay at Middlehill Farm. The site is spacious, peaceful, and extremely well maintained, with excellent, clean facilities throughout.

The onsite playground was a huge bonus — it’s brilliantly designed, well kept, and our children had a fantastic time playing there.

All the staff were incredibly friendly, approachable, and always happy to help or offer advice on places to visit nearby. The onsite shop is also really convenient and well stocked with all the essentials and tasty food items.

We couldn’t have asked for a camp site — highly recommended!

Disliked The weather, but there was nothing that could have been done about that :)

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We loved the place completely. The toilets, put washing area and showers were lovely and clean there is a fridge freezer in pot wash room
there is a lovely little shop stocked with things you might forget right up to your airbed! We went no ehu but brought my electric air beds with me, they blew them up at the shop then deflated them without any fuss!
There is a lovely playground for the kiddies and plenty of room for everyone
There are farm animals around and some lovely walks, the camping fields are very well kept and the owners are very friendly and the couple that run the shop are really lovely people

Disliked The blooming wasps! We went into Matlock bath and they were suffering from them too!
The camp does have traps up everywhere but there just no stopping them!
It must be a side effect of the heat wave

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked A great family friendly campsite. I haven't been camping in years, and it was my youngest sons first time in a tent and we both loved it. Facilities were great, he loved the play park and the pizza was delicious.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks. The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round. Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too). To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each. The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.
