Middlehills Farm Campsite: Camping field and picnic benches

General

  • Immaculately-kept site family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers

Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills.

This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from small people heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly hol by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from pitch.)

Kids will be enthusiastically entertained with the opps to pet and give treats to the Middlehills Farm pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings.

Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a toilet and shower block (showers are £1 for five minutes or 20p a minute), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

Please note

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of the shower.

Kids loved the playground and fort, facilities were great and well maintained. Clwe’d planned to visit Dovedale and Matlock and this was ideally located between the two.

Host was so helpful and gave a friendly welcome and the site is in a lovely location with pretty views all around.. I was able to upgrade to an electric pitch too which was really useful. The site is well maintained, nice and clean toilet block and hot water for pot wash. I enjoyed some peace and quiet in the corner of the campervan site, only being 'disturbed' by the chickens ranging free. My pitch was nice and level and ground was soft enough to use normal pegs on my awning. I definitely recommend this site.

    Disliked:

I did take my bike with me, hoping to cycle out directly from the site, but the main road was really too busy for me - the lorries from the nearby quarry did not make it appealing and I was on my own so didn't want to take the risk. Ditto walking along the road (to the pub!) is a tad dicey but do-able. This is obviously not a reflection on Middlehills campsite themselves - just something to possibly bear in mind.

The campsite was easy to find, really clean and tidy and great for families

    Disliked:

The showers, although I didn't mind paying 20p a minute as soon as you put money into the box it starts which is not ideal when your still fully clothed such peraphs be a start button or the boxes actually in the shower, I would of preferred to pay extra and use of shower be included. It was also pretty loud.

From the manager...

Hi Thank you for your review, may I point out there is a really large sign that tells you the showers will start as soon as you put your money in ? so no need for you to be fully clothed ! It can be loud as we have lots of familys on and children having a good time, but not after 10.30pm.

The facilities are great. Lovely clean park. And a little shop onsite.

    Disliked:

We understand there is a time limit for music. But to be approached in a manner we did was uncalled for. It costs nothing to be polite. We would have understood if we went over 22:30but it was 22:30 and listening to the last song. It also seemed it was only my family that was approached on both nights as other campers were still playing their music.

Directions

From Junction 28 of the M1, take the A38, heading for Ripley, then turn onto the A610 heading to Ambergate (you can follow the signs to Gullivers Kingdom). Turn right onto the A6 to Cromford, turn left into Cromford, then right onto the A5012 for approximately 4 miles. You will arrive at a T-junction with the Hollybush pub on your right. Keep straight on for 400 yards and you will see a sign on your left for Middlehills Farm. Turn left over the cattle grid and up the drive. You have arrived.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks.

The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round.

Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too).

To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each.

The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.
