Middlehills Farm Campsite: Pitch in the first field

General

  • Immaculately kept site, family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers

Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills Farm Campsite.

This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from kiddie heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly holiday by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from your pitch.)

Kids should be enthusiastically entertained by the chance to pet and give treats to the Middlehills pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings.

Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a toilet and shower block (showers are subject to an extra charge, so remember to bring some coins along), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

Please note

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of the shower.

The site is well kept and everyone we interacted with was lovely. The shop has essentials at a very reasonable price for those little things you might forget! (Washing up liquid for us!) as well as sweets and other treats. Kids loved the park and near enough to the pitch that we could let them run wild. Will definitely be camping with middlehill again!

Amazing site I paid £36 for 2 nights (2 adults 1 child) on a non electric pitch. Toilets, showers & pot wash were super clean, little shop with friendly staff, park area for kids was great, chickens and pigs to pet too. Couldn't have asked for a better site!

Very nice, fairly large site, with very friendly staff and clean, well maintained facilities.

    Disliked:

Although the location is very scenic, there are no footpaths that can be reached to go for a walk, without first surviving a scary 500m rush down a fairly busy road (without a pavement). Slightly busier and noisier at night than most other sites we’ve been to.

Absolutely everything! I loved how well the animals were looked after, the pigs home was like a palace compared to some of the sites we’ve been to which had animals. And the chickens came to see us just before we left which was so lovely! We met the lady who ran it who was so nice and her daughter and her lovely pony! Such a great place and we already cannot wait to come back next year! The toilet and shower block were spotless! The views from where our tent was were just amazing, you’re quite high up so the views are just awesome. We’ve already recommended to loads of people so cannot wait to come back next year! Thank you so much xxxx

A wonderful site for a peaceful country get-away. Stunning views around the camping field and animals all around for children to enjoy watching.

Facilities were well thought out and very helpful. Having a full fridge/freezer in the washing up are was really useful, and though we didn't use the shop in the end we still appreciated it being there for emergencies, and the lady running it made a point of coming out to introduce herself which was lovely. Toilets/showers were very clean. Playground was great, though it was a bit too wet for us to use much.

    Disliked:

Only slight gripe is that the showers, though single-sex, aren't locked (apart from the cubicles themselves) and since you have to come out to the main area to put your money in (probably in just a towel) it didn't feel very safe.

From Junction 28 of the M1, take the A38, heading for Ripley, then turn onto the A610 heading to Ambergate (you can follow the signs to Gullivers Kingdom). Turn right onto the A6 to Cromford, turn left into Cromford, then right onto the A5012 for approximately 4 miles. You will arrive at a T-junction with the Hollybush pub on your right. Keep straight on for 400 yards and you will see a sign on your left for Middlehills Farm. Turn left over the cattle grid and up the drive. You have arrived.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first few days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks.

The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round.

Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too).

To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each.

The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also generally recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.

Must see
