General

  • Immaculately-kept site family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers

Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills.

This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas clan for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from small people heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly hol by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from pitch.)

Kids will be enthusiastically entertained with the opps to pet and give treats to the Middlehills Farm pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings.

Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a loo and shower block (showers are £1 for five minutes or 20p a minute), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

The pitches take tents, tourers and motorhomes, and as you'd expect for a free-range and friendly farm, you can settle yourself down anywhere that tickles your fancy.

The field is big with lots of flat areas, lovely soft thick grass. From our tent we could see sheep, horses and pigs what more could you ask for. The facilities are good and plentiful. There is a small shop for any forgotten necessities and eggs milk and bread etc. A lovely bonus was the food van selling breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning. The staff are friendly, there is loads of space for ball and bat/racket games . Our children loved the play area, even our 17 year old enjoyed it(with no wifi reception it was get outside, read or sleep all day) We had a lovely relaxed stay.

    Disliked:

Phone reception (virgin)mostly non existent but honestly it was nice to disconnect for 48 hours. it's a big site so can get very busy and noisy with everyone chattering in the morning but it's big enough that you have plenty of space so even that's not a really bad point.

Staff were lovely and very helpful. Campsite location was beautiful and just close enough to Matlock that any forgotten items can be bought there (10 minutes drive).
Animals were adorable. Facilities were clean and many drinking water outlets on site.

    Disliked:

Showers only take 20p and £1.00 coins so make sure you have plenty as 1 or 2 minutes goes faster than you think.
The farm machinery and main road nearby could be heard most of the time but not usually during the night and not overly loud.

Good clean family site with lovely views. 23/07/2017

The site was a lovely family site, lots of play areas for children and space for young families to play and share together. Ok, we left our 20-something children at home, but it is always lovely to look back and reminisce when ours were young! Lovely views of cows and sheep, and like others have said, there are pigs too. The toilet block was clean, and although the site was busy, I never had to queue. The breakfast van in the morning was a godsend, as our van ran out of gas on Sunday morning!! Thank you. Lovely to see and smell so many woodfires, even on the rainy evenings we spent there!

    Disliked:

Like others have said, there is nothing in safe walking distance - the nearest pub does not do food (not the campsite's fault!!) and is not a safe walk anyway. The 20p per minute shower charge is ok to me, but some guidance as to coinage would have been helpful. Nothing too bad as to stop us going back! 😊

    Beautiful views and excellent facilities!

Stayed here with our family for 2 nights in a couple of tents and a camper van (non-electric pitch). It was a busy summer weekend but there are plenty of showers, toilets and washing up areas to use. The showers are wonderful (warm, very clean and £1 for 5 minutes gives you enough time). Everything on the site is really well kept and sign-posted too.

Even though it was busy, we were all surprised how quiet it was on the evening. No loud music or rowdy groups - a lot of couples and families which were all respectful of each other which created a great atmosphere on the site.

The kids loved the playground and although we didn't use it, the catering truck looked great and was well used by other visitors. The onsite shop was good and well stocked.

There was also a visit by an ice cream van on the Sunday morning which the kids really enjoyed!

Thank you for a wonderful stay; it really is a very well kept and welcoming site.

    Disliked:

The quarry was very noisy in the early hours of Saturday morning up until lunch time. There is obviously nothing the owners of the site could do about this. Wonderful site and would definitely visit again.

Well managed. Relaxed atmosphere. Good location. Great views. Ground soft for pegging out. Affordable rates. No wifi so the teenagers reverted to being kids again.

    Disliked:

The pot washing facilities in one of the side blocks is too low and narrow, making washing up difficult, especially if your bowl is not the right size to fit in the trough.

Directions

From Junction 28 of the M1, take the A38, heading for Ripley, then turn onto the A610 heading to Ambergate (you can follow the signs to Gullivers Kingdom). Turn right onto the A6 to Cromford, turn left into Cromford, then right onto the A5012 for approximately 4 miles. You will arrive at a T-junction with the Hollybush pub on your right. Keep straight on for 400 yards and you will see a sign on your left for Middlehills Farm. Turn left over the cattle grid and up the drive. You have arrived.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks.

The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so say we too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round.

Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too).

To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each.

The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but we'd quickly also recommend walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.

Must see

  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (3.6 miles)
  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (3.9 miles)
