Camping field and picnic benches

General

  • Immaculately-kept site family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers

Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills.

This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from small people heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly hol by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from pitch.)

Kids will be enthusiastically entertained with the opps to pet and give treats to the Middlehills Farm pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings.

Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a toilet and shower block (showers are £1 for five minutes or 20p a minute), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

A charge of £0.20 ($0.25) applies for the use of the shower.

All onsite food and drink establishments are closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Easy to find, pleasant owners, clean, well maintained site with good facilities. Access to see farm animals a nice touch for the kids. As the name says, 'middle hill' and site is on a hill surrounded by hills and has amazing views. Firepits and BBQs are allowed, provided they do not damage the ground, which is a must for me. Great little on-site shop with any forgotten necessities.

    Disliked:

Whilst it did not bother me in the slightest and completely out of the owners' control, the nearby Quarry does work fairly long hours and can be heard ( I was pitched probably at the closest point to the Quarry). A good base to visit local attractions (e.g. Matlock Bath) but the roads are not especially walker friendly - again, this is completely out of the owners' control.

    - Plenty of toilets, hand sanitiser provided and seemed clean (short stay so didn't use the showers)
    - Nice countryside view
    - Feels fairly private if you can get a pitch around the edge of the field
    - Pig and cows in adjacent fields
    - Site was quiet despite being fairly busy and there was no noise at night

    Disliked:

    - Struggled with phone signal (not owners fault obviously but something to bear in mind if this is important to you)

Directions

From Junction 28 of the M1, take the A38, heading for Ripley, then turn onto the A610 heading to Ambergate (you can follow the signs to Gullivers Kingdom). Turn right onto the A6 to Cromford, turn left into Cromford, then right onto the A5012 for approximately 4 miles. You will arrive at a T-junction with the Hollybush pub on your right. Keep straight on for 400 yards and you will see a sign on your left for Middlehills Farm. Turn left over the cattle grid and up the drive. You have arrived.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks.

The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round.

Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too).

To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each.

The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.

Must see

  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (3.4 miles)
  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (3.7 miles)
  • Haddon Hall (5.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (1.7 miles)
  • Kedleston Hall (11.8 miles)
