  • Small and dog-friendly glampsite in the Peak District National Park
  • Monsal Trail 10 minutes’ drive and Chatsworth House 20 minutes
  • Partly-furnished yurt 10 minutes’ walk from the local pub
If you’re in search of a peaceful Derbyshire spot to lay your head, you’ll certainly find it at Brosterfield Farm, a glamping micro-site 20 minutes’ drive from Chatsworth House in the Peak District National Park. Cows and sheep will be your neighbours, and although it’s part of a caravan site, everything here is very relaxed, and there’s a ban on loud noise and music. Designed for couples (and their dogs) who don’t want the hassle of setting up tents, Paddington’s Yurt is a spacious wooden cabin ‘in the round’, furnished with a sofa, double bed (you’ll need to bring your own linens and towels), bedside tables and patterned rugs to cosy the place up. It's off-grid (without electricity or heating), so it's dimly lit with low rechargeable lights. Facilities including hot showers, loos and washing-up sinks are shared with the caravan park. You can also use the electric-car charging points and recycling corner in the camping field. Barbecues are allowed in firepits hireable on site; there is an additional charge for logs, kindling and firelighters. Stock up on food at Bakewell supermarkets (15 minutes’ drive). If alfresco cooking is not on your holiday agenda, luckily there’s a dog-friendly pub 10 minutes’ walk away in Foolow, a Hope Valley village on the route of several walks and mountain-biking trails across the Peak District.

Paddington’s cabin

Liked Loved the yurt! Really clean and comfortable, with loads of space and more furniture than visible in the photos. There's also a picnic bench outside. Friendly and helpful staff

Local attractions

If you’re keen to learn a bit about Peak District history, start with the infamous ‘plague village’ of Eyam (five minutes’ drive), where you can see macabre plague-related dioramas in the small museum, have a wander up to Riley’s Graves, marked by seven tombstones protected by dry-stone walls, and take afternoon tea in cute tearooms. At the other end of the wealth spectrum from Eyam, impressive Chatsworth House (20 minutes) is set in Capability Brown-designed parkland and has a fantastic art collection in its opulent galleries and state rooms. (Mostly) medieval Haddon Hall (25 minutes) is another splendid spot for peering into the past; it’s open for tours of its vaulted banqueting hall and formal Elizabethan gardens. When you’d rather explore on foot, the Monsal Trail (10 minutes) offers spectacular views over Monsal Dale and the viaduct at Monsal Head. At Chee Dale (20 minutes), you can follow the River Wye through its limestone gorge, or if you fancy something a bit more hardcore, hire canoes, dinghies and sailboards from Carsington Water Visitor Centre (40 minutes). Happier on dry land? They rent out bikes too, so you can circumnavigate the lake.
