How far do you have to go from a city centre to find a place for a relaxing rural stay? In the case of Derbyshire’s Four Oaks Campsite, the answer is not far at all – this six-acre site in the village of Stenson is a mere five miles from Derby. That location makes this a pretty convenient site to travel to (especially if you’re a local looking for a quick breath of fresh air), and once you’re here you’ll be able to leave all thoughts of urban life behind. The surroundings here are all about countryside, canals, rivers and village pubs. The closest pub, in fact, is about five minutes’ walk away – and there are several more within a couple of miles, along with cafés, takeaways and shops. The shops in nearby Willington (five minutes’ drive) are likely to be particularly handy, as the site has a great little outdoor cooking area for guests to use, with a pizza oven and barbecues, plus picnic tables where you can serve up your creations. The level grass pitches also have access to a heated bathroom block (with ladies, gents and accessible facilities), a chemical disposal point and a communal fridge where you can stash your wares until you’re ready to cook. Golf, archery and axe throwing are among the outdoor activities you can try out nearby, and the proximity of both canal and river means there are plenty of options for fishing, launching canoes or just going for a scenic walk. A splendid two-mile walk along the canal brings you to Mercia Marina, where there is a nice assortment of shops, cafés and restaurants.

Liked Nice small site , didn’t use the shower or toilets
The reception man was nice and friendly
Only 4.5 mins I timed it 😂 walk to the cafe at the canal and the pub . Had a great lunch at the cafe and the dinner at the pub
All in all great place to stay

Liked Friendly owners that treated us on arrival and explained what facilities were where.

Disliked Nothing, I only marked it 9 out of 10 as the grass was a little long.

Liked Spotless toilets and showers. Brett and his dad are wonderful hosts and nothing is too much effort. Great idea with the communal kitchen area, it always seemed busy. Best thing is the location. Within 5 minuite walk you are on the canal towpath, turn left and walk into either Willington marina , or a host of pubs and cafe in the village, perfect on a summers weekend.

Disliked Not the quietist of sites with road noise, but its not too loud to disrupt sleep etc.
£30 a night without ehu is a bit steep for what is basically a field, with nop designated pitches.

Liked Great facilities. Toilets, showers clean and well tended. Pizza oven and barbecues available for use which was a lovely plus if we needed them. Road and train track nearby wasn't hugely noisy, peaceful nights.
5min drive to supermarket, pub, cafe, shops
Friendly site manager. Overall a lovely place to stay

Liked The owner, his daughter, and son in- law was all there when we arrived
Such lovely people
Nothing was to much trouble for them
Always asking us if we was ok
Made a point of knowing all our names
We was told all about the area
All the local pubs walks food and delivery’s of food to the campsite
And there is 3 or 4 bbq to use free of charge with gas
And a large pizza oven
Dogs aloud
Shower and toilets were spotless
Constant running hot water and power showers

Disliked Could do with some WiFi
Did get a signal but very intermittent

Local attractions

If your countryside break isn’t complete without a cute farm animal or two, start with an outing to Bluebell Dairy Ice Cream Farm (25 minutes’ drive), where you can meet Highland cows, miniature ponies, pygmy goats and kunekune pigs before sampling something from the range of tempting ice creams. Alternatively, meet the fluffy alpacas and maybe even take some for a walk at Charnwood Forest Alpacas (20 minutes). Walking trails nearby include routes along the banks of the Trent & Mersey Canal and the River Trent. A particularly intriguing route goes via Anchor Church Caves (10 minutes) – a series of natural caves historically used as a worship spot for Christians evading persecution. For a bit more history, head to the 1620s House and Garden at Donington le Heath (half an hour), visit National Trust - Calke Abbey (20 minutes) or check out the vintage aircraft at East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). And if you haven’t explored Derby (20 minutes) yet, it’s worth noting there are some great museums there too, including the Museum of Making and Derby Computer Museum.
