  • Glamping site five mins' drive from Peak District National Park
  • Quiet and secluded spot with views over Derbyshire countryside
  • Paradise for ramblers, bikers and petrolheads
Get ready to fulfil your Jane Austen dreams at Ernest’s Retreat, a family-run site on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, Central England. Pride and Prejudice fans may know that being this close to the Peak District means you’re within easy reach of tons of stately homes: the spectacular Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall are all within 25 minutes of Ernest’s. The site is also in a prime spot for getting back to nature. The site is five minutes from the edge of the Peak District National Park, where there are plenty of trails to follow and loads of walking tours to join. If you’re more of a petrolhead than a rambler, you can tour the Peak District in something a little more your style: a 1929 Model A Ford Phaeton, run by Vintage Adventure Tours. Relax back on site by filling your eyes with views over the Derbyshire countryside before filling your stomach by firing up the barbecue – pile it high with supplies from one of the shops 10 minutes away. Need a break from cooking? Head to Chesterfield to grab a table at one of the restaurants, or try one of the nearby bar-restaurants.

Camping cabin

Liked: A great overnight stay! Booking and check in was easy, the site is very peaceful and the cabin was spotless. We had a kettle in the cabin too alongside a heater which was great as the weather was a little chilly whilst we were there. The toilets were clean and well maintained too. We have stayed before and won't hesitate to go again, this place really is a hidden gem and feels safe and friendly. If you are thinking of booking, do it! Our little boy loved it and made friends with the children staying with their family next door, enjoying ball games on the grass. We also went to Matlock Bath for a couple of hours which is only a ten minute drive and is great for an 8 year old!

Disliked: WiFi was a little hit and miss if you need it during your stay, although we enjoyed the peace!

Rambler camping pod

Liked: Rambler pod was a good size for two adults. Enough space inside for a camping table and two chairs. Cosy and warm, didn’t need to use the heater very much at all. Toilet/shower facilities kept clean and regularly checked. Very friendly owners. Not too many pods so didn’t feel overcrowded/too busy. We had a very enjoyable 5 night stay and will definitely be returning!

Disliked: Nothing at all

Rambler camping pod

Liked: We stayed at the Rambler’s pod. It was clean and cosy. The pod had great views on the valley below. The facilities were clean too. The location was great - easy to get to the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District.

Glamper camping pod

Liked: Lovely pod, lots of room. Fabulous view and surroundings. Kettle and free tea/coffee/Galaxy hot chocolate. Clean toilets and hot showers. Sponges and washing up liquid provided in pot wash. Use of large chest freezer (ice creams in there at £1.20) You can park car up next to pod then park in the large car park next to the pods. Fire pits available to rent: £5 for the fire pit, £8 for logs, £2 for kindling. Free WiFi that ran at just over 20mbps in our pod. Friendly staff and just rang number to get pod key, someone arrived within 2 minutes.

Glamper camping pod

Liked: Excellent location for exploring with some stunning walks from the campsite and the towns of Bakewell and Matlock only a short car journey away! Facilities really clean and warm! (Despite sub zero temperatures!). Lovely friendly welcome. Super clean glamping pod with comfy beds and plenty of space for your own chairs and table if wanted. Only minor issues for us were the kettle being on such a low table as we had to move it out of the way of our toddler….and the steps leading up to the pod were a bit steep and sloped so again a worry with the tiny human. Neither would stop us staying again!

Disliked: Nothing!

Local attractions

Exploration of the Peak District doesn’t have to mean pulling on those walking boots, slapping on a helmet or doing your best Toad of Toad Hall impressions in a classic car – you can also have an altogether more sedate experience, with fishing and golf five minutes from Ernest’s Retreat or a saunter around the banks of Ladybower Reservoir, 40 minutes away. If you’ve already put the splendour of Chatsworth, Haddon and Hardwick stately manors on your list, now add the 25-minute trip to Bolsover Castle, a fortified retreat with a reputation for revelry. Tread lightly, though – they say it’s haunted, and you don’t want to anger anything lying dormant… If the kids haven’t hit those Jane Austen literary peaks yet, they may need something more than Pride and Prejudice vibes to keep them entertained. Luckily, the kid-friendly Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park is only 15 minutes away and the entire family can head to Alton Towers, just under an hour from Ernest’s, for an adrenaline spike.
