Upper Hurst Farm: Children having fun

General

  • Award-winning family-run rural site close to village and pubs
  • In the Peak District National Park
  • Play area, dog-walking area and friendly farm animals

It’s a fably warm welcome all round at Upper Hurst Farm. Previous guests have heaped praise upon the folk that run the place for their helpful and cheery nature, and there are plenty of furry friends on site too – the farm’s residents include an alpaca, Shetland ponies and a peacock.

This award-winning family-run site is just over a mile from the Derbyshire village of Hartington, 15 minutes' stroll from the village’s family- and dog-friendly pub; if you’d like to take in more of the area’s hostelries there are several within a couple of miles.

Being in the Peak District National Park means the farm is a fab spot for those setting out on walking or bike trails; cast your gaze a little wider and you can also easily hit stately homes, museums, activity centres and caves within half an hour’s drive. And it may not have escaped the kids’ notice that Alton Towers theme park just happens to be about half an hour away…

If you’ve not tired the kids out by day, there’s plenty of space for them to run about and play games at the dedicated play area; there’s also a space for cooped-up canines to let off steam.

The site’s facilities include wifi, a launderette and modern bathrooms with underfloor heating, free hot showers and a large wetroom for guests with reduced mobility or families hosing down wriggly tiddlers.

Toilet block was amazing - clean, warm, welcoming and quiet. Kitchen facilities great too. There’s a microwave, kettle and sinks to do washing up. Great strength WiFi on the pitch - an added bonus that we weren’t expecting!

    Disliked:

No reception so was tricky to check in on first day - think they’ve knocked the reception down to rebuild it but wasn’t super clear what to do or where to go (phone number on sign didn’t work). Very minor thing and sure will be fixed soon!

From the manager...

Thank you for your review!
We are currently having a new Reception built so there is a sign asking people to call our landline number to check-in. We didn't want to divert people to Lynn's caravan to check-in as that is her home. The phone number should have worked as it is our main landline - I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

It‘s such a friendly campsite, and incredibly well equipped. The showers are great, with underfloor heating. Your clothes don‘t get wet because the water is directed downwards. Simple but rare on campsites! And plenty of hooks! Not in the toilet cubicles though, but you can hang your coat over the lock.
The reception area was just a hole in the ground, adjacent to the lovely kitchen. Two sinks inside, one or two outside . There‘s a play area but it‘s also the dog exercise area. I can see a conflict, if dog owners aren‘t good at picking up after their pets. You can take them on to the road, there isn‘t much traffic, but the verge is only narrow. Take a torch! We had no moon and it was pitch black. Good for stargazing!
It‘s a great starting point for walks and cycle tours. Hartington is close enough to cycle for a meal.

Lovely located site with dramatic Dales scenery all around. The toilet/shower block was excellent, the heated floor a real luxury. The hard standing pitches have electric, water and grey water disposal another bonus.

We found the location excellent for cycling on the Manifold trail and other cycling & walking routes including the Tissington trail slightly further away but no problem on ebikes.

We would recommend the site without hesitation, another gem to add to our list of UK destinations.
