Hobson Farm: View from the bottom of the field

General

  • Small family-run site on a working farm in a small Derbyshire village
  • Peak District location, 15 minutes’ drive from the Monsal Trail
  • Footpaths from the site or village; a five-minute drive to six pubs

Longing for a peaceful hiking holiday in the Peak District National Park? What a position Hobson Farm will put you in for trails over the countryside, old railway lines, dales, moors and tors. That’s right – this small, family-run site is just 15 minutes’ drive from the Monsal Trail and 25 minutes from the High Peak Trail (two hot hiking destinations in the pretty Peak District).

Hobson Farm is based in the small Derbyshire village of Flagg, which the Limestone Way passes through. The Midshires Way's bridleways are around half an hour's walk away… and if that’s not enough to get you started with, Lathkill Dale is an hour and 20 minutes’ hike away.

First, you’ll probably want to top your flasks and bottles with fresh water from taps shared between every two pitches. There’s an outdoor toilet with a wash basin available for you to freshen up before you head out and an Elsan point to get rid of any waste. The field itself is flat and has good drainage, sandwiched between two working farms and set back off the road with bushes at either end.

There may not be a pub in Figg village, but you’ll be well-based for a tour of the local watering holes, because there are six pubs within five minutes’ drive of Hobson Farm. Two are easy enough to get to on foot, one being 35 minutes’ walk away in Monyash and another in Hurdlow (45 minutes’ walk).

If you’re already scheming and plotting out what walks might be on the agenda, other top picks (aside from those direct from the site) include the rocky landscape of The Roaches (25 minutes), the moors of Kinder Scout (45 minutes) and the 517-metre-high Mam Tor (half an hour).

Perfect campsite in a working farm27/09/2022

    Proper camping. Loved it!!
The site is on a working farm and the only noise you hear are from the cows.
The pitches were very large with water taps close by to tents so no going back and forth to a mains water supply.

There are no kitchen or shower facilities, but the toilet is clean.

Lovely pubs close by and not far from Buxton

    We will definitely return

Accommodated us as a group, one couple in a caravan, another in a motorhome and another in a tent. Large grass pitches, some with gravel hardstanding. Close, convenient electric and water supply to each pitch. Level on the hardstanding but slight slope on the grass. Lots of places to visit within reasonable distance. Advert said portaloo but there is now a plumbed-in toilet.

    Disliked:

Very sad to find that the only pub in the village was no longer trading.

The owner sent in advance the message with number of the pitch. The size of the pitch was great, there was enough space to put everything you might need, drinking water and electric power point were close to the tent, our pitch was on very level ground, drainage was brilliant. Toilet was good enough for the camping site, there were bottles with cleaning stuff , if you think something isn't clean enough for you)

The view wasn't nice at all. Our weekend was ruined, because we had two sleepless nights at this site. Actually it was restless weekend. In the day time noise of tractor didn't let me relax. Well, it's working farm and I expected some noises, but not all that much, that I won't be able to rest for a few hours a day. On Sunday morning tractor started to work about 7 o'clock, on Monday - at 5.50. It would not be all that bad, if I could sleep in the night, but, on Sunday two young couples played the music, were talking and laughing till almost midnight and then till the morning with around 15 minutes interval from one side we could hear very loud MOO and from another one the same loud BAA. My grandparents used to live not far away from the farm, and they had two own cows and a few sheeps, but I have never heard in my life that they would baa and moo all that much, like someone tried to kill them. Just before milking time cows were MOOING without stopping. Second night it was almost quiet between 2 and 4 in the morning. But is it enough two hours sleep in two nights? Obviously not. On Monday afternoon I went to work after camping and felt like I was working all weekends, never rested. People, who stayed in the caravans said that it wasn't too bad, but two young couples from two tents could not sleep the same like us. Plus our pitch was placed just opposite of the door where the cows stayed overnight. I think one morning the farmer took out the manure, because it terrible smelled. So, possible this site is suitable for caravans only. When I was looking for the camping site I saw in description the worlds "peaceful" and "adults only" it's why I chosen this one. "Peaceful" didn't relate to our stay unfortunately.

Local attractions

How do you like your hikes? With a waterfall and moorland views, like the landscape at Kinder Scout (45 minutes' drive)? Across a gritstone viewpoint where rock climbers often scale the crags, like Stanage Edge (half an hour)?

Perhaps you’d rather a shorter stroll, broken up with picnics in the peaceful grounds of Chatsworth House (20 minutes), a 1600s mansion. The towns of Bakewell (10 minutes), Ashbourne (25 minutes) or Buxton (15 minutes) will slow down the pace too, with plenty of places to stop for a Bakewell tart or another tasty bite to eat.

You’ll be going underground in search of limestone caverns with stalactites and fossils at Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes). Haddon Hall (20 minutes) is a different world entirely – a Tudor hall with Elizabethan gardens.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (5.6 miles)
  • Chatsworth (7.2 miles)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (11.8 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (8.0 miles)
  • Lyme Park (14.5 miles)
