General

  • Next to a pub/restaurant six miles from Buxton and 15 from Ashbourne
  • Access to the Tissington and High Peak trails; bike hire nearby
  • Heated amenities; pub, dining room and dog-friendly bar

What a grand site this is. March along to Derbyshire's Duke of York if you're looking for a Peak District pub site, close to its towns, and with spectacular views of the district and beyond from absolutely every pitch.

There's fably easy access from this popular site, as it's on the A515 (adjacent to the Duke of York pub and restaurant), six miles from Buxton, seven from Bakewell and 15 from Ashbourne. Footpaths accessible directly from here lead to the Limestone Way, the Midshires Way and the High Peak and Tissington trails; Peak District cycling is also within easy reach.

The site is a hit in all seasons with families, couples, singles and groups looking for a Peak District break but with a cosy pub, dining room and dog-friendly bar steps away. (Reservations are recommended for the dining room: just let the team know your preferred time by using the 'Special Requests' section in your booking form.)

Amenities are excellent too: there's a modern and cleanly-kept washroom block with underfloor heating, free hot showers, toilets and a washing-up area, and the site also has disabled facilities and chemical disposal.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Lovely site, a warm welcome on arrival with lots of local knowledge about walks etc.. clean and heated shower/toilet block.. which may struggle to cope (as some have said) when the site is full but hopefully not everyone will need to shower etc at the same time!.. lovely pub and friendly staff.. with the restaurant area for those of us with dogs, excellent food and wine & beer.. close to the road.. with a bit of traffic noise.. but this is stated when you look to book and we didn't find it a problem, we will stay here again when in the area.

beautiful 360 degree views of the countryside, pitches a bit 'cheek-by-jowl' not really an issue when there are only 3 pitches occupied, but this could be an issue in busier times, maybe you accept this as small price to pay for the views (which we could).
However will will not be returning.

    Disliked:

nonchalant, downright unpleasant owner......................'dog friendly pub' I wouldn't describe it as, in fact I would struggle to describe it as a 'people friendly pub'

The reason we booked this site was due to close proximity of the pub, however after such an uncomfortable, unwelcoming first visit, we didn't spend another penny in there, instead we went to the 'Royal Oak' along the trail, an establishment that I suggest the current incumbent of the 'Duke' pay a visit to see how to run a pub.

From the manager...

Dear Reviewer - You contacted me during our Closed period in January requesting to book on - I amended our PitchUp entry to enable you to come on site a day earlier than we had advertised re-opening.

On arrival it became apparent that your motorhome was 8.5m+ long ! . We discussed this - and as I remember, had a joke about it blocking the light from the Dining room you had parked in front of? You even gave me a list of places that you already knew you are unable to go to because of the length/weight of your vehicle.....Our pitches on PitchUp are advertised as 7m long but - as I explained this wasn't a problem as - as you say - we were quiet and we do have some longer pitches available to offer you. You agreed that that was all fine and went to Pitch.

The pub was nearly empty when you returned later on a wet Wednesday afternoon - as I served you we had a chat about your dog and the one left at home and the buses, taxis and local walks etc - and then I left you and your partner and your dog to your conversation and second drink....

We can agree that this is not the right site for you - perhaps contacting future sites in advance to check that they are able to accommodate your long vehicle would be advisable?

site great for walks with great views

    Disliked:

The pub and particularly the landlady. On arrival my wife checked us in with the owner who was very unwelcoming. My wife pointed out that we had phoned on two occasions to book a table for new years eve food in the pub, to which the landlady said there was no such booking and we must have called the wrong pub as she doesn't make mistakes and begrudgingly said she could squeeze us into a table by the door. We accepted it but checked our phone call records and sure enough it was the correct number. We went into the pub at 7 on new years eve and took up our seats ( really nice beer and barmaid really pleasant ) and attempted to order our food but couldn't have what we wanted because they had run out ( 7 o'clock really), and people came in after us and were able to have what we couldn't. The food we did have was poor quality and tasteless, fish crumble that strangely had no taste of fish a cheese board with no taste of cheese. My wife did have a dessert that she enjoyed but the rest was really poor and the pub was not very welcoming. We left at 8.30 and spent new years eve in our motorhome, which defeated the object of booking this site. We can see from other reviews that the landlady has previous for bad attitude. our advice is dont bother.

Local attractions

Leisure ramblers and hardy hikers alike, get set for days of Peak District outings on foot along the local hiking trails and long-distance paths.

Popular picks include the 46 miles of the Limestone Way, running through the White Peak of the Peak District National Park from Castleton south to Rocester in Staffordshire, and the Midshires Way 230-mile path from the Chiltern Hills to Stockport via Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Hikers can also access the Tissington (13 miles) and the High Peak (17 miles) trails close to the pub for a (relatively) easier Peak District wander.

Or set off by bike instead via the High Peak Trail at Parsley Hay, three to four miles from the pub and the closest place for bike hire if you haven't brought your own wheels (and for bike repair if need be). From here, the High Peak joins the Tissington Trail; set off on either for scenic rides among Peak District limestone, or pedal further on part of the 327-mile Pennine Cycleway where it meets with the High Peak Trail around Buxton

A stop is at the site if you'd rather get around by bus (one service per day runs to Buxton and Ashbourne), or the folks in the pub can put you in contact with a local taxi firm.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (6.7 miles)
  • Chatsworth (8.5 miles)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (12.5 miles)

  • Winster Market House (8.7 miles)
