  • Peaceful dog-friendly hillside farm site with level, mowed terraces
  • A 10-minute drive from Ashbourne; 15 minutes to Carsington Water
  • Fire baskets for hire and wood to buy; footpaths through the farm
Thorpe Cloud View Camping is all about the peaceful times under ever-changing skies. You’ll notice the sunsets, starry skies and landscapes are particularly pretty at this five-acre hillside site right outside the Peak District National Park, above the Thorpe Cloud Landmark at Dovedale with footpaths running through the farm. With pitches on level, mowed terraces across a hillside terrain, you’ll be well-positioned to descend on the national park, whether that’s the Stepping Stones (15 minutes’ drive), Ashbourne (10 minutes) or Matlock Bath (20 minutes). It’s peaceful up here, as things feel quite tucked away. However, the hideaway isn’t without its small bits of self-entertainment, as acoustic music is allowed (from gifted musicians only) before quiet time between 10.30pm and 7am and firepits are too – there are fire baskets for hire and wood available to buy from Ed the farmer or you can use your own off-ground braziers. As the site follows a peaceful, back to nature ethos, this isn’t a site for loud music or single-sex groups, but dogs (on a lead) are allowed as long as they can behave around livestock (there are sheep, geese and chickens on site). Entry to the site is down a 500-metre single track. The farmhouse, 200 metres away from the pitches, has an amenities block with showers and toilets (all free) and there's also a standpipe in the meadow. Please note that campervan and vehicle access to the camping meadow is restricted in the low season and dependent on weather conditions. Campervans and other vehicles will have access to a hardstanding/car park area at all times.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: ED! he is brilliant and along with that stunning view, makes coming here on my second visit what its all about, he welcomes me, looks out for me as a solo camper of which I feel incredibly safe here and know that if I need anything that I just have to ask, most of the time, he has already thought of it and provided.

Love the camp fire and wood that is available, I am aware he can provide some cooking tripods.

Spotless clean facilities.

Everyone on site are quiet and respectful and not too close I like that the field has options for being away in grass hides where my dog can have a bit of space and not be triggered by little people!
Ed manages his site brilliantly and while he has a warm welcome and wants you to enjoy your time, he does uphold his rules for anyone that is causing mischief so to not disturb others.

I love the peace and quiet and the head space I get from coming here.

It is away from it all, while being close enough for a quick drive into Ashbourne for anything yet on the edge of the wilderness, Dove Dale 5/10 min drive, perfect view of Thorpe. Where you can sit back and think " I climbed that today"

Loved the Geese even though they prefer me to stay at a distance which i respected

Other campers were friendly and let me know they were there if I needed anything.

I highly recommend this camp site.

I look forward to seeing how Eds campsite grows over the years to come.

It was great to see a full house so soon into his venture. Everyone get beind Ed.

Note to self: make Ed a brew next time!

Disliked: I missed his dog this year. I hope to come back one day to a new addition when the time is right.

I had to leave!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The views from the campsite were absolutely gorgeous. Ed was so helpful and really attentive, ensuring that we had the best camping experience. The plots were very well sized and the facilities were clean and plentiful. We hired a fire pit which came with a generous helping of logs and firelighters and the location was exceptional for local amenities in Ashbourne and Kniveton. We will definitely be visiting in the future.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Peaceful with lovely views. There are picnic tables available so saved us taking our camping chairs and table. We love the back to basics aspect of camping which this site is with portaloos etc. Ed is such a lovely and welcoming host, he made felt very comfortable. We like to go when it's not too busy, and try to get a quiet pitch away from people, which we managed to do on both our stays.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Thorpe Cloud View is perfect for a no thrills camping experience with spectacular views of the Derbyshire hills.
Ed couldn’t be more helpful, very friendly and laid back approach.
Choose your own pitch. Pitches are relatively flat and staggered up the hill so you never have another camper blocking your view.
Facilities are good, clean but basic.
You can have a fire/bbq, Ed has these to hire for £12 including wood.
Plenty of space for younger children to run around but if they need entertainment this isn’t the site for you. Walks from the doorstep. Amazing sunset and star gazing on a clear day.
Remember this is a working farm and so isn’t picture perfect but the views are. We loved it!

Disliked: Satnav does take you there but No visible signage on the road, so I did a couple of laps on the lane until a friendly farmer directed me - a small grumble

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: The location was fantastic, with amazing views and access to lots of footpaths nearby. The site exceeded expectations, Ed was welcoming and helpful throughout my stay and the atmosphere was relaxed, laid back and peaceful - even on a bank holiday weekend! The pitches were large and well-spaced, all with views over the rolling countryside and towards the sunset and the firepit made a lovely addition to my stay.
I cannot recommend this site highly enough and I will definitely return.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loved the location - so convenient for many nearby attractions and the view is incredible! Owner is incredibly friendly as well and there is plenty of space between pitches.

Disliked: Pitch wasn't particularly level so wasn't the most comfortable sleep - definitely scout out as level a pitch as possible but many of them appear to be on a slight slope. Also there was loud music coming up from the valley one night but that obviously isn't the fault of the campsite.

Local attractions

Historic towns? Terrific trails? Prehistoric sites? Absolutely. For the former, work a visit to the market town of Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive) or the spa village of Matlock Bath (20 minutes) into your itinerary. For the latter, Hob Hurst's House (40 minutes) is a prehistoric burial mound – and just another addition to a long list of historical spots across the Peak District, including the Nine Ladies Stone Circle (half an hour), Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (25 minutes), Tissington Hall (15 minutes), Kedleston Hall (25 minutes) and the Crich Tramway Village (half an hour). When it comes to trails, there’s a very splendid selection about. Perhaps a 13-mile cycle on the Tissington Trail (10 minutes) beginning in Ashbourne? The limestone gorge and country park at the Heights of Abraham (20 minutes)? The Dovedale (25 minutes) river walk to the Stepping Stones and the Thorpe Cloud? For those who like a paddle or a cycle, Carsington Water (15 minutes) is an attractive candidate. Family-friendly days are bound to be packed with activities there, and the same goes for the family-friendly theme park Gulliver's Kingdom (20 minutes).
