  • Peaceful dog-friendly hillside farm site with level, mowed terraces
  • A 10-minute drive from Ashbourne; 15 minutes to Carsington Water
  • Fire baskets for hire and wood to buy; footpaths through the farm
Thorpe Cloud View Camping is all about the peaceful times under ever-changing skies. You’ll notice the sunsets, starry skies and landscapes are particularly pretty at this five-acre hillside site right outside the Peak District National Park, above the Thorpe Cloud Landmark at Dovedale with footpaths running through the farm. With pitches on level, mowed terraces across a hillside terrain, you’ll be well-positioned to descend on the national park, whether that’s the Stepping Stones (15 minutes’ drive), Ashbourne (10 minutes) or Matlock Bath (20 minutes). It’s peaceful up here, as things feel quite tucked away. However, the hideaway isn’t without its small bits of self-entertainment, as acoustic music is allowed (from gifted musicians only) before quiet time between 10.30pm and 7am and firepits are too – there are fire baskets for hire and wood available to buy from Ed the farmer or you can use your own off-ground braziers. As the site follows a peaceful, back to nature ethos, this isn’t a site for loud music or single-sex groups, but dogs (on a lead) are allowed as long as they can behave around livestock (there are sheep, geese and chickens on site). Entry to the site is down a 500-metre single track. The farmhouse, 200 metres away from the pitches, has an amenities block with showers and toilets (all free) and there's also a standpipe in the meadow. Please note that campervan and vehicle access to the camping meadow is restricted in the low season and dependent on weather conditions. Campervans and other vehicles will have access to a hardstanding/car park area at all times.

What customers say

This well-regarded campsite offers stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere, with many guests praising the friendly and helpful owner, Ed. Pitches are spacious, and the location is ideal for exploring the surrounding countryside. Facilities are basic but generally clean, with hot showers available. Some guests noted that the men's toilet facilities were insufficient during busy periods, and a few pitches are on a slope. However, the overwhelming sentiment is positive, with many visitors stating they would happily return.

Liked Me and my friend were very surprised ....how amazing place was ...! Frist we meet Mr Ed that was fabulous ,kind and happy and specially helpful .

We love every minute at the campsite ....the view the location the moon in the night and stars ! Mr Ed make sure we had the best time in our life ....so he supplies us with fire pit and everything that you need for fire ....and it's not even expensive only 15£
There is toilets and showers as well + hot water + drinking water ....what else do you need ? I guess some cold beers only ;) and amazing atmosphere !
Definitely I recommend to anyone who love to connect with nature ....

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This was our first camping experience and overall we had a very positive impression of this campsite. The environment and views were lovely, and the whole place had a relaxing atmosphere.

One thing to note is that many of the driving paths around the campsite are mainly gravel roads, which may feel a little rough or risky for some cars. However, as long as you drive carefully, it should be fine.

Overall, the campsite environment was very good. The only area that could be improved slightly was the toilet facilities. The women’s toilets were perfectly fine, but the men’s side only had temporary toilets, which felt a little less comfortable compared to the rest of the campsite.

Despite that, we still enjoyed our stay and had a good first camping experience here.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This was our first time camping at this campsite and overall we had a really good experience.

The farm owner was very kind and friendly, and the whole campsite was well organised. The environment was lovely, especially with the good weather during our stay. We also liked the terraced layout of the campsite, which made the whole place feel nicely arranged and spacious.

That said, overall the campsite atmosphere was great and everything else was managed very well. We would still recommend this campsite and enjoyed our stay.

Disliked The only small downside for us was the toilet situation. Although there are separate toilets for men and women, the men’s side currently only has one temporary toilet. We understand that adding more facilities would likely increase the campsite fees, but during busy times there could be quite a long wait if someone urgently needs to use it. It also felt a bit difficult to comfortably use the temporary toilet for bigger toilet needs.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Ed was a fantastic host, regularly checking the site and making sure everyone was happy. We stayed 3 nights and had a fantastic view over Dovedale.

Basic but clean toilets and shower.
Very natural with no airs and graces, grass quite long, but it was dry so didn't bother us.

We had a wonderful stay and would recommend it.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The pitches were spacious. Views were beautiful and the location peaceful. The owner, Ed, was very friendly, helpful and talkative.
All of the positives above were spoiled by the substandard facilities; see dislikes.

Disliked The facilities.
Toilets consist of a single portaloo for gents and, in a small portable building, two toilets for ladies.
Additionally there were two usable showers (out of 3 potential) and two sinks in another portable building.

The gents portaloo filled up over the busy bank holiday weekend and ended in a revolting and unusable condition. It was not adequate for the number of male campers and wasn't checked and cleaned regularly enough.

The ladies toilets were better but ran out of soap and stayed that way for over 24 hours indicating again an inadequate checking and cleaning routine. Additionally one of the toilet door locks didn't work.
The ladies were in a portable building shared with the washing up facility. As a bloke tasked with doing the washing up this left me feeling uncomfortable and compromised doing it next to the ladies toilets.

There is no shade on the campsite.

It's a pity about the toilet facilities. A relatively small investment in another portable building like the ladies would resolve it. As it is now, with only one portaloo for gents, I would not return.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Location. Aspect overlooking the countryside is lovely. Quiet location, good rules around noise. Large pitches.

Disliked Facilities. Men had one porta loo between them. It was disgusting. Women had two loos, one didn’t lock and the washing up facility was also in here. Paper towels and soap ran out and bins were over flowing.
Two electric showers were fine. Just think with all the money made a bit of it could go in improving the facilities. As a man I would not return to the site because of the facilities.

Local attractions

Historic towns? Terrific trails? Prehistoric sites? Absolutely. For the former, work a visit to the market town of Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive) or the spa village of Matlock Bath (20 minutes) into your itinerary. For the latter, Hob Hurst's House (40 minutes) is a prehistoric burial mound – and just another addition to a long list of historical spots across the Peak District, including the Nine Ladies Stone Circle (half an hour), Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (25 minutes), Tissington Hall (15 minutes), Kedleston Hall (25 minutes) and the Crich Tramway Village (half an hour). When it comes to trails, there’s a very splendid selection about. Perhaps a 13-mile cycle on the Tissington Trail (10 minutes) beginning in Ashbourne? The limestone gorge and country park at the Heights of Abraham (20 minutes)? The Dovedale (25 minutes) river walk to the Stepping Stones and the Thorpe Cloud? For those who like a paddle or a cycle, Carsington Water (15 minutes) is an attractive candidate. Family-friendly days are bound to be packed with activities there, and the same goes for the family-friendly theme park Gulliver's Kingdom (20 minutes).
