A snowy day

  • Small touring site at a Derbyshire village pub
  • Ashbourne and Alton Towers both 15 minutes' drive away
  • Meals and wide range of drinks available in the friendly pub
Parking up by the pub is a fine idea for several reasons – the most important of those being that you’ll be able to have a few drinks of an evening without any worries about having to drive anywhere. That’s the particularly enticing attraction for the Roston Inn, as this site is in the grounds of a friendly Derbyshire pub which is open from 5pm on weekdays and from 12pm on weekends. Once you arrive, you’re likely to want to settle in for a while, either cosying up by the log burner or soaking up the fresh air from one of the outdoor tables. There’s a good range of cask ales, wines and other drinks to choose from, and a tempting food menu of pub classics, grills and kids’ dishes. Working up an appetite for all this should be pretty easy, as there are heaps of excellent days out nearby, from hikes in the Peak District National Park and watersports at Carsington Water to action-packed days at Alton Towers. Back at the pub, you’ll be staying at a small site where the grass touring pitches have hardstanding underneath for sturdiness, electric hookups are included and there are lovely views out over the surrounding countryside. Guests are welcome to pitch up, enjoy the view and then say hello to the owners in the pub when it opens. Toilets and washing facilities are accessible 24 hours per day, and there's a chemical disposal point for guest use as well. Ashbourne and Uttoxeter (both 15 minutes' drive) are your best bets for things like supermarkets, although you should certainly stop in at the Denstone Hall Farm Shop (five minutes) for local treats.

Liked: Surrounding countryside Proximity to Alton towers

Disliked: Despite the website saying the pub was open all day on Saturday it was closed when we arrived at 4.30pm. No one answered either of the two phone numbers listed and we hadn’t been given any instructions beforehand about where to pitch, how to access the toilets etc. The pub eventually opened at 6pm but when we went in we were told they weren’t doing food, which was our main reason for staying at the site.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Good food small camping area but never let first impressions spoil. Lovely food and beer and a great stopover. Missed the beer festival last week and in 2 weeks having a little music festival Wow

Disliked: Noisy tractors but it’s the season to get those crops in! Toilet could have been a bit sweeter smelling but was clean

Liked: Enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the Inn and locals. The food was very good and no problems bringing the dogs. The walks around the area were in most on public country roads but reasonably quiet. A public walkway around 20mins away took us alongside the river which was very peaceful and greatly enjoyed by the dogs. In all a pleasant stay and would return.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Enjoyed the stay overall, friendly staff and left to your own devices. Was very lucky to get clear access to our pitch. Toilet and shower available

Disliked: The access to the pitches is limited.. you are either blocked in or block someone else in.. no toilet paper... only 1 toilet.. food menu was either sold out or in stock and overpriced.
