  • Spacious pitches on a family-run organic farm in the Peak District
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Carsington Water, Ashbourne and Dovedale
  • Farm shop on site; handmade firepits provided for guests
If stunning views are a deal-maker when it comes to choosing a holiday, New House Organic Farm on the edge of the Peak District National Park might well be the place for you. It’s also a great spot if you're keen to leave a low carbon footprint and always make similar environmental considerations. A five-minute drive from the village of Kniveton, this back-to-basics site is on a 43-acre smallholding with free-range cattle, sheep and other assorted farm animals, plus a fruit orchard. The large, spacious pitches are placed in fields with loads of space, making it a great spot for family gatherings and for children to play. The site also includes wildflower meadows, woodland and hedgerows, and you don’t have to venture too far to come across a whole lot of wildlife. Composting toilets, a washing-up area and drinking water taps are the only luxuries – that’s if you don’t take into account the views of the gentle Derbyshire hills and the all-encompassing feeling of quiet (interrupted maybe by the odd cow lowing). Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but please do keep an eye on them, especially around the livestock. Ready for a hike in the Peak District? You can start easy, with Thorpe Cloud (20 minutes’ drive), whose silhouette is visible from the site; alternatively, head to Chee Dale (40 minutes’ drive), a gorge carved by the River Wye, or up Baslow Edge (45 minutes). Wherever you go, chances are you’ll have built up quite an appetite come the evening. So borrow a handmade firepit for free and hit the farm shop to stock up on organic meats, eggs and vegetables for your grill. If you don’t fancy cooking, walk 20 minutes to the local pub for homemade cider or food or you can take a short drive in pretty much any direction to reach a traditional pub that will serve more food along with a range of brews.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: The quietness of the farm Bob the farmer couldn’t help us enough. Loved being able to watch the stars and planes without a care in the world next to roaring fire.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The owner Bob, who is a walking encyclopaedia of local knowledge and history. The site is a place of absolute tranquility and it was quite a wonderful experience to wake up in the morning with a few sheep grazing around the tent. There is a cracking pub in the village called the Red Lion, a 15 minute walk away.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very good campsite, very friendly staff, not much noise other than some of the farm animals (but that is to be expected). the compost toilets didn't smell even though it was 29°c. Fires are allowed which is always a big positive for me.

Disliked: If you have a low car access might be abit challengeing but I managed it in a lowered mx5.

Local attractions

For those who are into birdwatching, Carsington Water (five minutes’ drive) has plenty of hides from where you can spy on kingfishers, grebes and buzzards. The reservoir has plenty more for outdoor enthusiasts, from canoeing and paddleboarding to trout fishing, not to mention a cycling route around the water. If the kids have joined you on hilly hikes without moaning (too much), reward them with a trip to Alton Towers (half an hour), where they can let rip on thrilling rides like rollercoasters and drop towers. There’s also a section for younger children, CBeebies Land, with adventure playgrounds and shows starring beloved characters like the Teletubbies. For something more relaxing, head to Crich Tramway Village (25 minutes), where you can ride vintage trams through a recreated period street lined with traditional and historic buildings, or stroll along the Woodland Walk taking in far-reaching views of the Derwent Valley.
