  • Spacious pitches on a family-run organic farm in the Peak District
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Carsington Water, Ashbourne and Dovedale
  • Sauna and farm produce for an additional fee; firepits provided
If stunning views are a deal-maker when it comes to choosing a holiday, New House Organic Farm on the edge of the Peak District National Park might well be the place for you. It’s also a great spot if you like your hot and cold therapy, as it's home to Peak Saunas, a wild sauna and cold plunge experience (available for an additional fee). A five-minute drive from the village of Kniveton, this back-to-basics site is on a 43-acre smallholding with free-range cattle, sheep and other assorted farm animals, plus a fruit orchard. The large, spacious pitches are placed in fields with loads of space, making it a great spot for family gatherings and for children to play. The site also includes wildflower meadows, woodland and hedgerows, and you don’t have to venture too far to come across a whole lot of wildlife. Composting toilets, a washing-up area and drinking water taps are the only luxuries – that’s if you don’t take into account the views of the gentle Derbyshire hills and the all-encompassing feeling of quiet (interrupted maybe by the odd cow lowing). Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but please do keep them on a lead at all times due to the free-range livestock. Ready for a hike in the Peak District? You can start easy, with Thorpe Cloud (20 minutes’ drive), whose silhouette is visible from the site; alternatively, head to Chee Dale (40 minutes’ drive), a gorge carved by the River Wye, or up Baslow Edge (45 minutes). Wherever you go, chances are you’ll have built up quite an appetite come the evening. So borrow a handmade firepit for free and hit the farm shop to stock up on organic meat and eggs or wood for the fire. If you don’t fancy cooking, walk 20 minutes to the local pub for homemade cider or food or you can take a short drive in pretty much any direction to reach a traditional pub that will serve more food along with a range of brews.

What customers say

A spacious, back-to-basics campground in beautiful countryside with stunning views. Campers love the friendly owners, roomy pitches, and farm produce. Composting toilets are clean, and fire pits are free. Most enjoy the peaceful nature, though some note noise and basic facilities, like the absence of showers.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Spacious site. Onlyb4 others there when we weee there . Water on site and Organic toilet and use of fire burners for free no check in by or
Leave by times and owners are very nice and friendly . Quiet peaceful and relaxed . Dog friendly too

Disliked £8 per sack of wood . But can bring your own organic toilet not for the prim n propper. It’s a toilet seat into a 6 foot drop of sawdust shit pee and weeeee. But it’s organic so must get used to spread on the land . Could be a bit pricey at £12 per person with no electric or waste bins. As you have to take your rubbish with you ..

From the manager: Hi Andy,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry that our pricing structure wasn't clear for you. I can imagine it was unexpected when I said that you needed to pay for the additional 5 people that you brought along with you if you thought you could have as many people as you wanted for £24 (the price of 2 adults, which is what you booked for) I think you'd be hard pushed to find anywhere that would have 7 people for £24!

We do our very best to set expectations about the farm and the camping too. Yes, we are VERY basic. A compost loo (the most environmentally friendly way to deal with human waste....and lest face it, we all poo!) And a cold water tap. What you also get are

- panoramic views of the peak district
- large spacious pitches with loads of room to pitch and play games
- fire pits to use free of charge (I know of sites charging £10 per night for these)
- no check in or check out times meaning you can makes the most of every day

Our bags of logs contain approx 15kg of wood. That's about double you would get for the same price in a petrol station or supermarket. Most people comment that it's a really good deal. We also say that people can bring their own logs as realise some people have access to logs themselves.

We know our set up isn't for everyone.... for the majority who come they love it. Less is often more ;)

Thanks
Emma

Would definitely visit again.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lots of space, beautiful views, basic very clean and well maintained toilet/washing facilities. Very much enjoyed our back to basics camp.

Disliked This was not the fault of the campsite but there was a group playing music until 1am though the camp rules are no music after 10.30pm

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very peaceful, lovely back to basic campsite, felt very comfortable staying as a solo female. It was great to be able to switch off from electronics.

Very close to Alton Towers.

Disliked Not a dislike but the steps up to the composting toilets on the top field became a little slippy with the wet weather. Maybe an addition of some chicken wire stapled to the step may help add grip.

Local attractions

For those who are into birdwatching, Carsington Water (five minutes’ drive) has plenty of hides from where you can spy on kingfishers, grebes and buzzards. The reservoir has plenty more for outdoor enthusiasts, from canoeing and paddleboarding to trout fishing, not to mention a cycling route around the water. If the kids have joined you on hilly hikes without moaning (too much), reward them with a trip to Alton Towers (half an hour), where they can let rip on thrilling rides like rollercoasters and drop towers. There’s also a section for younger children, CBeebies Land, with adventure playgrounds and shows starring beloved characters like the Teletubbies. For something more relaxing, head to Crich Tramway Village (25 minutes), where you can ride vintage trams through a recreated period street lined with traditional and historic buildings, or stroll along the Woodland Walk taking in far-reaching views of the Derwent Valley.
