  • Quiet rural site five minutes' drive from Ashbourne
  • A 10-minute drive from the Peak District; 20 minutes from Alton Towers
  • Country pub 10 minutes' walk away
Essential ingredients for a rural Derbyshire break? Peaceful spot surrounded by open fields, plenty of space for games/campfires/chilling out, pub a few minutes walk away… If that little collection sounds just about right, book yourselves into Brook Farm, a well-kept quiet site with no facilities out in the countryside five minutes’ drive from Ashbourne. The views here are mainly made up of various shades of green, in the form of fields and trees, with a few location bonus points thrown in for being on the banks of the Dove river. There’s plenty of space to play with around this site, but the folk here understand the value of peace and quiet, so they keep a lid on guest numbers rather than cram people in – and thumbs up to that move, as it leaves a great swathe of space for kids/dogs/demob-happy office workers to run around and for barbecues or campfires to be constructed safely away from the action. Beers, buns and burgers for the barbecue can be picked up from the butcher, baker and supermarket in Ashbourne. Want to stretch your legs further? There are plenty of walks to be had in the surrounds; arguably one of the most rewarding is the one that takes 10 minutes to get to the local pub. The Peak District National Park’s about a 10-minute drive away for more outdoorsy options, and Alton Towers is 20 minutes away if you want to swap rural rambles for rollercoaster thrills.

Cowfield electric grass touring pitch

Liked: We absolutely loved everything about this place. Beautiful scenery all around, excellent walks both short and long. The onsite toilets were really clean. Plenty of space for the kids to run and play. Fire pits available to borrow. Lots to visit in the area too. The hosts made this visit absolutely delightful. As our first time using our own caravan we would like them to know they made this first experience wonderful for us. So helpful and accommodating to us as first timers.

Cowfield electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice location. An hour walk into Ashbourne. No shower or toilet facilities which we knew about. Fresh water available and somewhere to empty our portaloo. Ann the owner is lovely and met us on arrival to direct us. Very quiet site with nice views. I would stay again but only for couple days max due to no showers being available

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The people who own the farm were lovely, the field itself was good, spacious with level pitches and we were put next to our relatives as requested. The toilets are cleaned daily and kept to a high standard as much as possible and there are cleaning products out and available for guests to use should they wish. The Farm is in a great location too, lovely area.

Disliked: There are 2 port-a-loo's and no toilet block/shower or washing up facilities. The owners ensured the toilets were cleaned regularly and they were cleaned well, however we have stayed at many sites in and around Ashbourne that have had all of the facilities for the same and cheaper prices. Hence why I have given 4 not 5 stars

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: very quite and peaceful would not recommend to tents, only for caravans with toilets

Disliked: As me and my partner where reading up on Brook farm before booking we read that there was no shower facilities which we where ok with and had no issue with, however we did not expect no shower facilities to entail a portable toilet which did not get changed our whole stay, or no sink to brush our teeth and no where to wash up, the only water supply we had was a cold tap on the fence which was no good for washing up at all. As well as this, on our last night after having a ok stay the people who owned the farm decided that without consulting me or my partner that it would be a good idea to cut the wet grass around our tent late at night which then meant that my hay fever was awful and it meant that when we were packing up the next day we had grass stuck on everything and has stained lots of our belongings, was not impressed.

From the manager: Dear Aimee Thank you for your review. We only advertise a portaloo and it has a sink. It was fully serviced on Monday and you were the only people to use it. There is, a, sink in there as, well to use. We provide washing up bowls, washing up liquid, Jay cloths, scrubbers etc and hand gel is plentiful. You had an electric pitch to boil your water and this is camping and not a site with everything. The grass has to be mown and is a, working farm and the weather has been so wet of recent. I agree not ideal. You were not approachable as, you zipped up your tent so made it clear not to disturb you both. He gave you a wide berth. This clearly wasn't the site for you but we do not advertise anything that we do not provide.

Owners were very friendly and lots of local info.

Cowfield electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site, great communication day before and on day of arrival. Plenty of room for awnings etc. All is clean and tidy.

Disliked: The lane leading to the site is very narrow and motorhomes could have an issue. No showers or camp kitchen, toilet is a plastic festival tardis. This would be an issue if the site was full. An investment in a small shower and toilet block would make this site completely and we would return no problem.

From the manager: Thznk you for your review and appreciated. We, advertise we have a portaloo which is immaculate and, serviced weekly/ daily. This is not constructive as everyone is, aware when booking.

Cowfield electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Open countryside, quietness. Lovely village with church and great architecture.

Disliked: Limited to 1 Portaloo and no sinks for washing up for the whole site. Pleased I was in a campervan with facilities. Stayed 2 nights. May stay again if in the area. Expensive booked through Pitchup. Not good value.

Local attractions

The Peak District National Park is quite simply a fab place to spend a few days roaming around on foot, on bikes, on horseback… If you can’t pick a place to start your explores, perhaps aim for the stepping stones across the valley at Dovedale (15 minutes’ drive), or set out on the Tissington Trail, which heads out of Ashbourne to wend its way along 13 miles of abandoned railway line. Much excellent wandering can also be done in the grounds of the area’s smart stately homes. Chatsworth (40 minutes) is a fab place to fill a whole day out: as well as the art-filled house and gorgeous gardens, there’s also a farmyard, a kids’ trail and a huge playground area. The National Trust’s Sudbury Hall (15 minutes) and Kedleston Hall (20 minutes) are mighty fine options too. If you love a good scream as you plummet earthwards on a rollercoaster, a day out at Alton Towers (20 minutes) is a must on the schedule. For somewhat gentler family days out, try an animal encounter at Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes) or a steam-driven ride on the Churnet Valley Railway (20 minutes).
