  • Family-friendly farm site in the Chiltern Hills National Landscape
  • LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort 40 minutes’ drive; Thorpe Park 45 minutes
  • Dog-friendly pitches; animal encounters available; barbecues allowed
Fancy taking a breather from daily life and heading to the Buckinghamshire countryside? Make a beeline for the family-owned Penn Meadow Farm, set in 145 acres of the Chiltern Hills National Landscape, where you can set up camp on a dog-friendly, tree-sheltered meadow with spectacular views over fields and forested valleys. Happy to hang out at the farm? The kids will probably love the chance to meet the resident pigs, sheep (with their lambs in spring) and alpacas, as well as Bobby the border collie. There’s plenty to do in the local area, too, with lots of public footpaths going straight from the pitches, red kites to watch soaring overhead and several golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive. If you feel like a foray into London, Marble Arch is just an hour’s drive away, but when your offspring find out that LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort is just 40 minutes in the car, chances are you’ll have no peace until you take them there. Back on site after your daytime expeditions, you’re welcome to have a small campfire in the evening, and the farm owners can supply wood. Alternatively, the site is five minutes’ stroll from Britain’s oldest free house, the half-timbered Royal Standard of England, where you can sample local ales and enjoy delicious roast dinners.

Lynn S.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The area and facilities were great. Owners/staff were also lovely.
Other campers were friendly too.

Disliked I felt it lacked organisation. I stayed 2 nights and went out during the middle day. On my return a family with very young children had set up within yards of my tent & pup pen so when I backed my van with 3 dogs up to my tent the other tent was around 2 metres away. Despite there being ample space elsewhere on the site.
My dogs are great, quiet and used to being around others, but it didn't make for the most relaxing stay.
I think measured pitches would make more sense.
I probably wouldn't stay again.

From the manager: Hi Lynn,

Thank you so much, the team all love what they do and we are so glad that came across, it means to much to hear that as everyone works so hard.

We have open pitching to allow families to meet up on site and camp together, I personally, also have issues with measured pitches as my tent is a 12 sleeper and wont always fit which is stressful.

If you do decide to join us again please do speak to the team who will support you, they will happily chat with some people who are too close and help them re position to ensure everyone can enjoy their space.

We have it in our welcome guidance to be 5m from the next camper and so it is easy for the team to just remind people.

We hope you and your dogs enjoyed your stay even with your close neighbours

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good facilities for campers
Great value

Disliked It sadly isnt dog friendly
Having two of their dogs free running round the field, meant our dog was kept on a short lead as they quickly ran at him scaring him
They pissed up our tent
And let themselves into it and ate our dogs food
Sorry but this isnt acceptable nor dog friendly for our dog!

From the manager: Hi Jo,
Thank you so much for reaching out with your experience, it is very helpful.

We have many dogs on site at all times and many enjoy the experience, I am so sorry you did not have this.

As advertised we are a working farm with working three dogs who ensure the livestock (which is also free roaming) is kept safe at all times. They are meant to be working, but this does not mean that they don't bunk off from time to time.

They are also very accustomed to other animals on site and sharing space. I can not make comment on if the animal you are describing is one of the working dogs or another visitors dog. We just encourage anyone and everyone to talk to the team who will be able to support you further.

If you want a night club in a field thats family friendly its great .

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The owner of the site are lovely , friendly people , they work really hard to keep the site clean tidy and the toilets and wash rooms clean and well stocked. They even provide a kettle , toaster , and gas hob to cook on with tea coffee milk and sugar if you forget yours or run out .

The landscape is beautiful and the kites are wonderful to watch from early morning if its not too crowded on site .

Its got a lovely walk to the local
Pub that does excellent food and drink and when theres only the bell tents and a few campers its an amazing place to stay , chill by a fire , let the kids run about and play etc .

If you want somewhere to camp as a group or friends , a family camp you can let off steam let the kids run riot while the grown ups make the most of the bbq and a few drinks its perfect .

If you like to know theres food available close by and onsite its wonderful ( they do pizza )

If you want a really short walk with the little ones through a beautiful woodland to an ancient pub its brilliant .

If you like being around a busy atmosphere and lots of people socialising ( think a wetherspoons in a field with fire pits ) this place is perfect !

Great for a quick weekend escape from London .

Disliked Unfortunately I went on a weekend when they must have been holding a school
Trip or a birthday party . So it was absolutely packed out , ( not always an issue) it was boiling weather , very little shade (take a sun shade and a cool
Box ) and lots of fires, which were just left unattented when the wind picked up and everyone had gone home .

Sadly whilst the site itself is wonderfull , rude and inconsiderate campers with no respect for other peoples camping spaces or property seemed to find it neccessary to repeatedly trample my tent , trip
My guide ropes , kids didnt seem to understand what "please can you go around the camp fire rather than over my tent on your way to the loos " and there was no consideration to other people camping who may not want bright torches shining into their tents at night and loo doors being slammed shut all night long .

It was lovely to see famililes enjoying the place and letting off steam , just a shame they didn't respect other people who were there .

So double check you are going if theres an event on - its great if you want to be kept up all
Night and can survive on little sleep but its a lot of money to pay to be surrounded by people who will trample your tent , nick your fire , wander through your camp area even if they can go round it , and then dumb all their crap
Outside the bathrooms and leave them flooded with water , covered in blood and throw loo roll up in the trees .

I really feel
For the owners , who had to clean it all
Up afterwards . Despite it being beautiful - simply due to the awful
People that visited Id only go back if it was empty .

As a solo female traveller I didn't feel at all safe with the blokes who seemed more interested in taking over where i was camping than finding out if i was ok with it .

The sunday when everyone had gone home and it was just me and 30 birds or prey was absolutely magickal . Go when its quiet !

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking time to leave such a full review, im sure many people will find it helpful when making a booking.

We are so blessed to be surrounded in so much beauty and we are indeed so blessed to have the red kites back after their successful re introduction to the Chilterns. We hope you enjoyed the pub, we also enjoy eating there! it is so good and just fascinating to see.

It is interesting you mentioned escaping London, we see couples taking quick week day breaks here at Penn Meadow Farm, our first guests this season, visited for this reaosn.

You are quite right we did have a large school booking for families who do not have the opportunity to spend time in the country side and many of the families have never even seen a farm. It was unfortunate that they also did not understand the general etiquet. One of the team did spend some of Saturday evening with them supporting them to understand expectations.

We do now send out in our welcome email that everyone must allow space between tents to allow privacy.

We will happily support campers to find dates when we are less busy as this benefits everyone.

It was a lot of work to maintain the cleanliness of the site, luckily we really do have an incredible team who all love Penn Meadow Farm.

If you every feel unsafe as a solo traveller please do talk to the team, your more than welcome to camp closer to them and they will be able to find space for you to feel more comfortable.

I also recommend coming up for the Sauna sessions, they are really empowering and an incredible way to reconnect to nature. So far the sessions have been women attending independently.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Quick, friendly email comms prior to booking.
They allowed a small group of friends which other campsites don't allow. Not all groups of friends are rowdy and trash the place and Penn Meadow Farm were so welcoming.
Lovely space.
Good facilities.

Disliked Nothing, it was all lovely, super impressed.

From the manager: Hi Jennie,
Thank you so much for taking time to leave feedback, Im sure you can tell that we all really do love what we do. Thank you for sharing the space with us and we hope to see you again very soon.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loved the actual space, the wildflower meadow is fabulous to camp by and just watch the insects darting in and out. Brilliantly located to footpaths and the local pub, which is perfect with a dog to avoid road walking. Lovely and quiet.

Disliked Could do with a few more showers. Surprised at the amount of dogs wandering around off lead (not including the sheep dogs). Only one drinking water tap, which is also the washing up area can cause queues.

From the manager: Hi Sonia,
Thank you so much for your feedback, we are so glad you enjoyed it and that you were able to enjoy the natural space that we have been working on. It really is such an amazing space that it so close to town yet somehow hidden in the hills. We do have two drinking taps in the main field and one in the Alpaca field, I'm so sorry you didn't locate these. Please let us know on your next visit and we will show you where to find them.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely location, it feels very rural when actually you are surrounded by busy Bucks but it’s all hidden by hills. It’s a very short walk to the Royal Standard pub which was charming.

Disliked You already know the plumbed facilities are limited; it is what it is; this should not stop you staying here! Unrelatedly, it was very difficult to get pegs more than 3 inches into the ground due to stones but such is life.

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking time to leave a review it means so much to our team who really love what they do. It is so beautiful and like you say it feels so much more rural than it is. Thank you for also understanding about the limitations we have on adding more facilities, we are working on this as fat a the council allows.

Local attractions

Surrounded by ancient woodland, National Trust - Hughenden (20 minutes’ drive) was the country home of Victorian prime minister Benjamin Disraeli and an RAF nerve centre during World War II. Check out the art collection and library inside the red-brick mansion, then take a stroll through the manicured gardens, with their pristinely maintained paths. See how our ancestors (both remote and recent) lived at Chiltern Open Air Museum (20 minutes), where reconstructed historic buildings range from an Iron Age roundhouse with mud walls and a thatched roof, to a 16th-century oak-framed barn, as well as Victorian structures and wartime prefabricated huts. Children will think they’ve hit the jackpot when they realise it’s not just LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort that’s within fairly easy reach from the site, but also Thorpe Park Resort (45 minutes), with its thrill rides (such as Nemesis Inferno, with an inverted vertical loop) and Chessington World of Adventures (one hour), which includes a zoo.
