  • Dog-friendly wild meadow site on an organic Buckinghamshire farm
  • A 10-minute drive from Waddesdon Manor; 15 minutes to Aylesbury
  • Values of health and sustainability; farm café from Friday to Sunday
Green-fingered and keen on a getaway that’s got the same values? Pitchcott Hill Farm is such a place, founded on sustainable, organic and biodynamic farming. The large, handsome meadow is part of a friendly, authentic organic farm where the pitches are spaced out for privacy and wildness – that means acres of space (literally, as the field is 14 acres in total). Nature’s at the fore here, that’s for sure, and it all begins in the site’s camping shower, set up inside a hedgerow alongside the meadow. It’s inside a tree, so you’ve got a hot shower just like at home, but with a natural cubicle and wildlife as your viewing window. A firepit is provided here ready for evening time – and for other facilities, there are toilets and charging points. Off site, there are plans of action for both foodies and walking fans alike – first, a whole load of footpaths in the surrounding Buckinghamshire countryside and, just over the fields, a pub in Oving (around 20 minutes’ walk) with a jewel of a menu and beer garden. The local village, Whitchurch (35 minutes’ walk) has shops for everyday essentials and the local farm shop (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to pick up local and seasonal produce. The aim of the farm is to regenerate the health of the soils, so sustainability, regeneration, woodland creation and environmental protection are all at its core – and the team are grounded in creativity, authenticity and inclusivity for a healthy community feel.

What customers say

This spacious, peaceful campsite offers beautiful views and a natural setting. Campers appreciate the quiet atmosphere, ample space, and the unique hedgerow shower. The option to hire fire pits and wood is popular. Staff are consistently described as helpful and friendly. While facilities are generally clean, some guests noted minor issues such as a lack of hooks in showers and a tricky compost toilet latch. The site's car-free field policy enhances the tranquil experience.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great meadow campsite with well spaced out camping pitches. A huge meadow space with some amazing views of the surrounding farm land. Compost toilet and outdoor shower available. Very friendly owner. Parking and cafe next to the camping meadow. A real good camping spot.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely quiet, spacious campsite. We were tucked away in a corner of the field and had a really good space to ourselves.
The hedgerow shower was a wonderful, liberating experience, and the composting loo and cold water sink were absolutely fine.
It was great to be able to book a fire pit and wood, and it kept us warm well into the evening.
We were glad of the rule that we had to take our car back to the car park after dropping off our stuff - very mildly less convenient, but much nicer to have a field without cars.
The owls hooting across the field at night were a special treat!
All in all a great campsite if you just want a quiet simple time.

Bell tent

Liked The bell tents and the location was outstanding. The toilets and showers were spotless and fantastic.

The walk to the local pub was wonderful too!

Disliked Would have been useful to have somewhere to wash things up, a larger sink/tap. Other than that it was grand.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Peaceful site
Lots of space and generally level
Plenty of parking
Café on site
Toilet block is clean but not really sure if this is only for bell tent users.
Good access to nearby NT properties - Waddesdon Manor and Ashridge House etc

Disliked Seems to be a lack of obvious facility checking (eg; no timed list showing facility last checked at...) - hedgerow shower never worked, always (very) cold. Needs a wind cowl to stop pilot light blowing out if that is the problem.
Beware the latch on the compost toilet. From inside when closing the door, it can flick up and lock, but the thumb latch isn't adequate to open from the inside. Really needs fixing - safety hazard. Toilet seat was unclean underneath when first used - cleaned it myself and it stayed clean while we were there.
There are thistles in the field - it's wild camping to an extent, but if you go to the far side opposite the barn, there were fewer.
Fridge in the barn is only for bell tent users too. Why?
Lastly, may just be me, but we received the wrong email and were then asked to pay more for staying in the wrong place. Pitchcott then wrongly calculated the difference. They didn't appear to accept their two errors. Customer service severely lacking - friendly, but lacking any warmth,

From the manager: Dear Anonymous, thank you for your comments about our peaceful site, I am glad that you appreciated this. Regarding the remainder of your review, I would like to set the record straight with the facts of what happened. You booked a stay for 3 nights in a regular camping pitch, and yet when you arrived you checked yourself into our bell tent.

Our team member on site mistakenly thought that you had booked the bell tent. When she found out that you hadn’t, she asked you very politely to pay the additional amount due. And she generously offered a discounted amount, rather than the full amount of what you should actually have paid, but you did not even agree to pay that.

You received the correct information at the time of booking, with clear instructions of where to go to pitch your tent. On the day of your arrival you received a further email, with the same instructions, with the error on our part that it included a reference to a stay in the bell tent. We acknowledged to you that error, and It in no way justifies you helping yourself to (someone else's) accommodation that you had not booked.

All the facilities were checked on Friday before the arrival of the weekend's campers. At Pitchcott we pride ourselves on our friendly and warm welcome, and also on the vast majority of our customers who show respect and consideration both for the beautiful natural surroundings, as well as for the welfare and wellbeing of other campers.

Vet clean and well looked after site, we'll certainly return.

Bell tent

Liked Fantastic location and incredible views all around the site. The view from the swing seat was breathtaking! Very new and clean facilities and friendly owners. A very good spot for peace and tranquility. Camping field a very good size, we stayed in a bell tent which was basic but had comfy mattresses and perfect for a night or two.

Disliked No hooks for towels or clothes in showers, no mirrors and showers overspill onto the floor with nowhere to drain off. All
Very minor points for what are fantastic facilities

Local attractions

With the Chiltern Hills to the east, there are many trails within reach, and the Phoenix Trail (half an hour’s drive) is one of the highlights. Between Princes Risborough and Thame, this seven-and-a-half-mile route is free of traffic, meaning you’ll get to cycle, walk or horse ride in peace – good conditions to spy on red kites and birds of prey about the area. National Trust properties know a thing or two about a peaceful time, too. Perhaps you’ll want to fly a kite, practise your aim with archery on the Dunstable Downs (35 minutes) or see rare birds at the aviary at Waddesdon Manor (10 minutes)? Boarstall Duck Decoy (half an hour) has just one of four duck decoys remaining in England, too. Now, how about a ride of some type? There are rollercoasters at Gulliver's Land Theme Park Resort (35 minutes) or steam train rides from the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre (10 minutes). Meanwhile, the vehicle of choice at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London (45 minutes) is a broomstick… and in Oxford (50 minutes), a punt.
