  • No-frills farm campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire
  • Legoland Windsor Resort half an hour’s drive; Thorpe Park 45 minutes
  • Camping field bounded by woodland; two pubs within five minutes’ drive
When you’re looking for a slice of country living under canvas, but equally well can’t face pottering down too many country lanes, Ellis’ Hill Farm Campsite will suit you very well. Just double check the directions on your way there, as satnav may direct you through a ford and you don’t want to end up with a car issue.
At 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire, this peaceful farm site is close to several major road networks. Even better news – for the kids if not your pocket – it’s within half an hour by car of family attractions like Legoland Windsor Resort and Beale Wildlife Park. Sheltered by tall trees, the camping field is mostly level with a few undulations. You’ll need sturdy footwear, and as it’s only mown once a year, if you’re a repeat visitor you’ll see how the meadow grows through the seasons. Also be aware that there’s no electricity to hand, so bring torches for wandering around your pitch after dark.
The surrounding woodland is a fascinating habitat for wildlife. Don’t be surprised if you encounter the odd deer or sneaky fox – just please make sure your food is stored away from all animal foragers. Barbecues are allowed on site, but of course you can also sneak off to the two local pubs (both around five minutes’ drive) for a pint and helpings of comfort food.

What customers say

This back-to-basics campsite offers a peaceful, natural escape with spacious pitches and friendly, helpful owners. Popular highlights include the on-site cafe with delicious breakfast baps and lovely woodland walks. Basic, clean toilet facilities are provided, though some guests noted the absence of showers. The bumpy access track is mentioned, and while some reviews highlight noise from nearby farm operations, many find it a great value location for a relaxed stay.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Very peaceful, clean but basic facilities and lots of nature.

Close to a pub and it was easy to get an Uber into Reading....cost about £15 each way from The Bull Inn....didn't go in but looked like a lovely pub

Disliked You need to be very careful walking across the field....there are lots of dips/ small holes that are hidden by long grass.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. It’s very useful information about Uber prices. Also, The Bull has had very good reviews from our campers.

We note your comments about the uneven ground. The wet winter has caused some ruts and we are working towards filling them in as soon as possible. Thank you for letting us know your thoughts.

We remind guests that sturdy footwear is advised at all times.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Big open space and you could pick where you set up camp. Rustic charm.

Disliked Not a dislike just a bit of feedback. Whilst we dont mind a bit of long grass the grass was so long we would have needed a rug to flatten the thick blades of grass for us to sit on our chairs. It had been raining and we got there about 7pm and only stopped for the night so it wasn't a problem but usually we dont find sites have grass quite so long.

From the manager: Thank you very much for your kind comments.

Liked I absolutely loved the lay back feel to the place. The owners were fantastic and gave a warm welcome over the phone and the next morning. I had great conversations with the guy who owns the land.
Wonderful walks around the land and through the many forest paths with my little dog. It felt very safe there and really does have an indescribable vibe about the place.
I loved that it’s not far from London and I could drive in just over an hour and truly relax in this place after a busy work week.
Lovely cafe which also offers local meats. Loved the duck eggs I bought and cooked for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning. There is something about this little spot.

Disliked Nothing

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review.

We’re so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us.

The walks around here are amazing. You can lose yourself for hours if you have the time!

Our shop is currently open from Wednesday to Saturday, so best to stock up early if you want ingredients for Sunday breakfast!

See you again soon, we hope.

Liked Wonderful secluded site. Pleasant area.

Disliked Hard to find but the cafe was a giveaway once I knew it was the entrance.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the trouble to leave such a nice review.

It is indeed secluded, and therefore a bit hard to find!

It’s worth it though!

See you again soon.

Route directions

Please use Gravelpit Hill Lane to access the site. Satnav devices often suggest Ellis’ Hill as the best route, but there is a ford that can be quite deep. Stay on the B3030 (Arborfield to Twyford or vice versa), drive to the top of Gravelpit Hill Lane and turn right. The farm is a few hundred yards on the left. What3words: blip.reverted.cutback.

Local attractions

The kids will be pestering you for their day on the water rides, gentle rollercoasters and splash parks at Legoland Windsor Resort (half an hour’s drive), where they can also build their own Lego Ferrari. Once that’s done, no doubt Thorpe Park (45 minutes) and all its adrenaline-inducing thrill rides will be on their agenda too. All wildlife lovers will appreciate the chance to spot sloths, monkeys and reptiles moving about freely in tropical glasshouses at The Living Rainforest (35 minutes). Another option is to head for Beale Wildlife Park (half an hour) to feed exotic capybaras and tapirs or get up close to whiskery binturongs, cat-like mammals from southern Asia. To up the activity stakes, set out on the lake for kayaking adventures at Wokingham Waterside Centre (15 minutes), or try out the paddleboards and sailing dinghies at Dinton Pastures Country Park (10 minutes). If you hit the odd rainy day, you can catch blockbuster films at Showcase Cinema de Lux Reading (10 minutes), or take refuge on the lazy river and waterslides at under-cover Coral Reef Waterworld (25 minutes).
