  • No-frills farm campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire
  • Legoland Windsor Resort half an hour’s drive; Thorpe Park 45 minutes
  • Camping field bounded by woodland; two pubs within five minutes’ drive
When you’re looking for a slice of country living under canvas, but equally well can’t face pottering down too many country lanes, Ellis’ Hill Farm Campsite will suit you very well. Just double check the directions on your way there, as satnav may direct you through a ford and you don’t want to end up with a car issue.
At 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire, this peaceful farm site is close to several major road networks. Even better news – for the kids if not your pocket – it’s within half an hour by car of family attractions like Legoland Windsor Resort and Beale Wildlife Park. Sheltered by tall trees, the camping field is mostly level with a few undulations. You’ll need sturdy footwear, and as it’s only mown once a year, if you’re a repeat visitor you’ll see how the meadow grows through the seasons. Also be aware that there’s no electricity to hand, so bring torches for wandering around your pitch after dark.
The surrounding woodland is a fascinating habitat for wildlife. Don’t be surprised if you encounter the odd deer or sneaky fox – just please make sure your food is stored away from all animal foragers. Barbecues are allowed on site, but of course you can also sneak off to the two local pubs (both around five minutes’ drive) for a pint and helpings of comfort food.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Lovely owners, very helpful. We got there late so didn’t have a great deal of time there just an overnight for legoland but the views in the morning over the field was beautiful! The boys particularly liked the rope swing!

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked We loved our stay at Ellis' Hill Farm, especially watching wild deer grazing metres away from our caravan. Close enough to Reading for visiting our daughter but completely rural and surrounded by walks in beautiful woodland. We felt really welcomed and bacon butties and tea at the cafe was an added bonus. We look forward to returning.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Coffee with the locals Saturday morning. Pork butchery onsite and amazing. The hosts are the most genial and accommodating in 8 weeks on the road. In the country ( it is a farm ) very quiet and deer in the meadow in the morning. Clean washrooms, no showers. Great value.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Lovely, accommodating staff. Great site. For the price and the honest description, I got exactly what I was expecting from the site. For those negative reviews, I suggest they pay over the odds for a luxury site… I love that we can still get away in this country for minimal cost and minimal gimmicks. A true back to basics weekend with great links and plenty of local attractions. Will definitely stay again in the future. The toilet facilities could do with an update, however it’s perfectly serviceable.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked - Site feels secluded and remote despite being close to big towns like Reading and Wokingham
- Short, pleasant off-road walks to 2 decent pubs

Disliked - The guy who ran his petrol generator all evening and following morning (looks like a permanent resident?) - definitely not a peaceful experience
- Haulage company lorries arriving and unloading until around 1am
- As with other reviews, bathroom facilities are functional but pretty grim

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Friendly staff and very relaxed atmosphere, lovely to be in nature and see the geese flying over and the rooks circling before roosting at night. The cafe and farm shop looked nice but we didn’t have a chance to sample it. Lovely walks nearby.

Disliked Unfortunately there was work going on well into the evening, lorries loading up with aggregates in the yard near the field. The toilets were very basic and although the toilet itself was clean the room wasn’t, sink, walls and floors very dusty and grimy and no hot water. Without showers on site this might be the only option for those camping to be able to wash but not a problem if you have a camper van.

Route directions

Please use Gravelpit Hill Lane to access the site. Satnav devices often suggest Ellis’ Hill as the best route, but there is a ford that can be quite deep. Stay on the B3030 (Arborfield to Twyford or vice versa), drive to the top of Gravelpit Hill Lane and turn right. The farm is a few hundred yards on the left. What3words: blip.reverted.cutback.

Local attractions

The kids will be pestering you for their day on the water rides, gentle rollercoasters and splash parks at Legoland Windsor Resort (half an hour’s drive), where kids can also build their own Lego Ferrari. Once that’s done, no doubt Thorpe Park (45 minutes) and all its adrenaline-inducing thrill rides will be on their agenda too. All wildlife lovers will appreciate the chance to spot sloths, monkeys and reptiles moving about freely in the tropical glasshouses at The Living Rainforest (35 minutes). Another option is to head for Beale Wildlife Park (half an hour) to feed exotic capybaras and tapirs or get up close to whiskery binturongs, a cat-like mammal from southern Asia. To up the activity stakes, set out on the lake for kayaking adventures at Wokingham Waterside Centre (15 minutes), or try out the paddleboards and sailing dinghies at Dinton Pastures Country Park (10 minutes). If you hit the odd rainy day, simply catch blockbuster films at Showcase Cinema de Lux Reading (10 minutes), or take refuge on the lazy river and waterslides at under-cover Coral Reef Waterworld (25 minutes).
