Idyllic woodland pitches
Secluded personal pitches
Tent pitch
Riverside pitch, under two great oaks, with ponies in the field on each side

  • Simple pitches on a peaceful 75-acre historic farm estate
  • Within Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park; Dolgellau 10 minutes' drive
  • Easy access to the Mawddach Trail and local walking/bike trails
Spacious pitches… seaside strolls… Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park… if such phrases fill your heart with glee, you should be pretty content at Cefn Coed. This spacious site is in a gorgeous Gwynedd location, within the national park and about 10 minutes’ drive from both the market town of Dolgellau and the coast at Fairbourne. If you’ve come to north Wales for the scenery, you should be pleased with your lot here: it’s in a sheltered valley of ancient oak woodlands, close to where the slopes of Cadair Idris roll down to the banks of the Mawddach Estuary. The site is part of a historic Welsh farm estate with 75 acres of farmland and forest – and the nearest neighbours are almost a mile away. Miles of walking, cycling and riding paths are easily accessible, including the famed Mawddach Trail (follow it all the way to Dolgellau, Fairbourne and Barmouth, or to a tiptop local pub/restaurant). There is also a circular route just above the property with some further viewpoints. Facilities on site include an amenities block with showers, toilets and a washing-up area. Filtered mountain spring drinking water is provided near the farmhouse, along with a freezer for ice packs and a facility for charging phones or small battery packs. During high season, the on-site bar serves local ales and cocktails. There is a food truck during high season where you can pre-order woodfired pizzas and morning coffee and croissants. Book yourself onto an on-site course or activity too, like guided local walks, bushcraft, sound baths and foraging courses. The distance between the car park and pitches is variable and parking by the pitch can't be guaranteed. Pitches are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis; if you have a particular request please let the site know and they'll do their best to accommodate you.

What customers say

Highly recommended site with stunning woodland/riverside spots for a "wild camping" feel & good amenities. Friendly staff, beautiful nature, and great features like clean showers & wood-fired pizzas are praised. Some noted facilities' distance/busyness, but most loved the peace & seclusion, planning return trips.

Oak Woodland primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked Secluded woodland pitches, great location, lots of wildlife nearby

Bar and pizza were a nice addition

Staff were friendly and helpful

Disliked Only 3 showers and 4 toilets for the whole site - had to queue to use these. Some of the toilet door locks were very stiff - thought I was going to get stuck in them a few times.

The shop/check-in felt understaffed at times but this could be due to it being a busy weekend.

Parking for the woodland pitches was over crowded and not clearly marked, making parking difficult at busy times.

Some of the woodland pitches were difficult to access (eg steep slopes, uneven paths) - something to consider if you have access issues.

Field primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked The setting is stunning with access to walking/riding trails straight from the site. The access to the site was easy to navigate, the owner/staff are very friendly, the facilities are clean and functional, there is a little shop for essentials including fire pits & wood and the site has a quirky/charming layout including bar/pizza area. I wish I had booked further in advance to book a woodland pitch...they looked ideal.

Disliked The bank holiday weekend proved that the toilet/shower facilities are rather limited and the site could do with a secondary toilet/shower block for the field-campers at the bottom of the hill (it's quite a walk and seemed busy). A composting toilet was provided, however filled up quickly.
Also, not really a dislike but worth mentioning some of the gates are quite tight and awkward so be warned if you arrive in a large van.

Field primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked The meadow was beautiful and well kept, lots of space so plenty of room to pitch and surrounded by pretty trees and hills. You can walk straight down to the estuary from your tent down a beautiful forest track and plenty of other tracks to go from there too. There are benches dotted around the walking track next to the water etc if you want to take a picnic, walked past lots of forest pitches with amazing views which will have to try next time. The campsite was nice and calm and quiet. The bar area is lovely and cosy and theres plenty of board games/playing cards to choose from and they provide blankets you can use, dog treats and dog water bowls.

There’s a shop on site with essentials and snacks/drinks and midgie repellant/nets (which was definitely needed). Toilets and showers are very clean and warm.

The best thing about Cefn Coed was the staff, they were all so friendly and helpful and the whole place has such a lovely family vibe. (Also the breakfast muffin from the food truck!)

Disliked Nothing apart from the midgies!! The onsite shop does provide nets and repellant etc but definitely go prepared as we were not and got overrun by midgies.

Also if you want to be close to the toilets would advise requesting a closer pitch as the meadow is about a 4/5 min walk to the toilets and showers

Field primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Loved it, real back to nature site. Found trails that were really isolated and perfect for that recharge you sometimes need in life.

Disliked Genuinely can’t think of any real negatives. Just one thing, they charged me £1.50 for a lighter I needed to start my fire pit, thought they could have just lent me one!

Field primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Lovely campsite - very peaceful and unique with it's woodland setting. We also appreciated how social it was - the communal bar area with food and drinks available to buy is a fab new addition to the site that we weren't expecting. Plus a great location right on the mawddach trail meant we were able to hike right from the campsite. We'll be back!

Disliked Quite small toilet and shower block for the size of the campsite - plus it was a little walk up the hill from the field camping. Not really a big deal for us but might be tricky with young children/if you're less mobile/need to use the bathroom during the night!

Oak Woodland primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked Brilliant spot if you want to experience wild camping but with some facilities with it. Went with a few friends and we had a great time. Picked the riverside pitch which took some endurance to get your stuff up and down in the wheelbarrows but well worth it. Couldn’t ask for a better location in our opinion…exactly what we were looking for. Plenty of hikes and walks to do around the area. One last thing….Richard was an absolute diamond of a bloke. Really helpful and just a pleasure to talk to

Oak Woodland primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked The location is stunning, with a wide range of Forest Pitches+ excellent amenities- the showers are especially nice.
It was delightful to see all the animals around the area and walking through the woodlands is gorgeous and secluded, our pitch felt very private.
The hosts are very friendly and gave us some excellent recommendations for walks in the area and they responded quickly to help with any queries.

Local attractions

Ready to ramble? Take a wander around Abergwynant Woods, 20 minutes’ walk away, or get set to conquer Cadair Idris, the slopes of which you can reach on foot in a couple of hours. The New Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) is a fab choice for spectacular views; if you’re more into moving at speed, make for the mountain bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin forest park (also 15 minutes). For less energetic days out, take fishing rods off to the banks of Cregennan Lakes (15 minutes) or Tal-y-llyn Lake (20 minutes) or make a break for the seaside at Fairbourne (10 minutes), where you can ride the heritage railway for a properly chilled-out time, or Barmouth (20 minutes). Keen to see what lies beneath? Take a boat ride into a world of subterranean dragons and the like at King Arthur’s Labyrinth (25 minutes). Back up in the daylight, ancient Cymer Abbey (10 minutes) and the fab Italianate village of Portmeirion (40 minutes) are top ports of call.
