Electric grass pitch

  • Peaceful, scenic North Wales site on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia)
  • A 10-minute drive to Caernarfon Castle; 20 to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry
  • Table tennis, skittles and pool table on site; 20 acres to explore
With a magical setting overlooking Eryri (Snowdonia) hills, Rhyd y Galen is a peaceful caravan and camping park in rural North Wales. Fancy exploring the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the stunning North Wales coastline and the Isle of Anglesey? Then this is your place. For your ease, access to the grass camping pitches is via tarmac roads. Generous in size and fully serviced, these pitches with a whole host of facilities, from a spotless shower block, well lit at night for your convenience and kitted out with hair dryers to keep you looking your best, to a family-friendly baby-changing unit and a laundry. On hand are 20 acres of land for families (and any canine pals) wanting to be out walking, playing and exploring, and if the kids should get restless, keep them entertained with games of table tennis, table football, skittles or pool. If you need to stock up on groceries, there are several supermarkets in Caernarfon (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy making a night of it in the town’s pubs and restaurants, ditch the car and jump in a local taxi.

What customers say

Reviewers rave about this campsite's cleanliness, roomy sites, and top-notch, modern restrooms. Staff are friendly, the vibe is peaceful, and the location's great for exploring North Wales. Minor notes on road noise and a wish for more on-site services are outweighed by the well-kept grounds and overall positive stays. Highly recommended!

Liked Cracking site! Bigger than the kind of sites we normally use, but laid out in such a clever way that it never felt too big. Huge, spacious pitches on the grass field - along with some really lovely secluded pitches that are tucked away into little nooks.
Toilets and showers were spotless - although I wonder if there would be enough of them when the site is at its busiest.
All in all, a little gem of a site!

Disliked The only minor issue for us was the road noise from the by-pass. It's not dreadful, but it's just a little invasive at times, especially for me as I'm a light sleeper. It wouldn't put us off coming back, but I'd probably try to got a pitch as far away from the road as possible.

From the manager: Thank you so much for this lovely, detailed review — 'a cracking site' and 'a little gem' are exactly the kind of words we love to hear!

We're really pleased the layout worked well for you. It's also great to know the toilets and showers were spotless; We have a lot of seasonal pitches, so even on Bank Holidays, there are enough facilities, as only a small proportion of the seasonal customers will be there at the same time.

We appreciate you mentioning the road noise too. We know it can be more noticeable for some guests than others, especially light sleepers, and your plan to request a pitch further from the road next time sounds like a great approach — our team would be happy to help with that on arrival.

We hope to welcome you back again soon!

Great site. Would visit again if i was in the area.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked - On check-in I was provided clear instructions on how to get to the field, and a recommendation on where to pitch the tent to best avoid the winds coming in.
- The toilet block we used was modern and scrupulously clean. The toilets were not very busy at all (visited 26th-28th June).
- Grass was at a good height for camping. Ground was perfect on which to peg down the tent.
- It's very convenient for a quick drive into Caernarfon, and within 10 minutes you can be on Anglesey.
- Has WiFi, which was great. Note, however, we were not able to stream a football world cup game with consistent results.

Disliked - the only VERY MINOR complaint would be that the toilet blocks are farthest away from the field for tents and camper vans. So a 3-4 minute walk for a shower. I know, it's far from the end of the world! :-) But there is also a single toilet (no shower) by reception, so that's much more convenient during the night.
- the minor road runs past the tent field, but as it's not too busy it's not really a concern unless you're a very light sleeper.

Liked Great well maintained site with lovely views, very helpful and accommodating staff, facilities are modern and very clean (shower rooms were great and no push buttons). Fox field grass electricity pitches were very spacious. Great dog walks and an off lead enclosed field also available. Free WiFi with reasonable speed which makes a nice change.

Disliked Fox field was a little uneaven, struggled a little to level even with ramps but not a show stopper. Seems to have lots of buried rubble so knocking pins in was a little hit and miss. Will try a hardstanding pitch next visit.

From the manager: Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful review — we really appreciate it!

We're delighted to hear you enjoyed the views, facilities and the team's helpfulness, and it's great to know the showers and WiFi speed stood out too — little touches that make a real difference! We're also pleased the dog walks and enclosed field went down well.

Thank you for the honest feedback about Cae Llwynog—We appreciate you flagging the unevenness and the hard ground making pegging trickier. We'll take a look into this. In the meantime, it's a great idea to try a hardstanding pitch next time, and our team would be happy to help you find the best fit on arrival.

We hope to welcome you back again soon!

Liked This is a professional ran caravan and campsite. It has gorgeous toilet blocks and the grounds are looked after throughout the year. This was my second visit. Also, there is an undercover area to play pool and ten pin bowling.

Local attractions

Standing where the Afont Seiont river meets the Menai Strait, Caernarfon Castle (10 minutes’ drive) is a forbidding medieval fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Perhaps best known as the place where Prince Charles was invested in 1969, it also houses the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which explores the history of this infantry regiment. If you’re in a ‘feel the fear, but do it anyway’ mood, you can head to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes), where the Velocity 2 zipline stretches across a lake, allowing you to travel at speeds of up to 100mph. If you are brave enough to keep your eyes open during your flight, you can also take in splendid views of Eryri (Snowdonia). For something less hair-raising, Portmeirion (40 minutes) is a village featuring Italian-inspired pastel-coloured buildings and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Grab an ice cream from Italian gelateria Caffi’r Angel, and take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets or along the sandy beach on the Afon Dwyryd estuary.
