  • Two-acre site on a family-run smallholding in Bishops Lydeard
  • Five minutes' walk from West Somerset Railway steam trains
  • Rural site backed by woodland; two pubs within a few minutes' walk
If you like to arrive in style on your holidays, this is certainly a place where you can do just that… Bishops Lydeard Caravan and Camping Site is one of those rare places where you can ride into town on a steam railway, thanks to the West Somerset Railway station a mere five minutes’ walk away. Those planning to ride the rails at a later point, meanwhile, should be pleased to hear that access in a more conventional manner is also straightforward, as the A358 passes fairly nearby. Either way, this is a rather splendid spot with pitches spread across a two-acre field surrounded by protected woodland just on the edge of the village. It’s all been set up in the grounds of the 18th-century Greenway House, a Grade II-listed building that was once part of the adjoining Sandhill Park estate. It’s now a family-run smallholding, so you’ll share the space with ducks, geese and chickens and there are more farm animals to spot in the surrounding fields. As well as being a top spot for train enthusiasts and those in search of farm stays, this place also has much to offer walkers, cyclists and folk travelling with four-legged companions, thanks to the plethora of pathways in the surrounds. And it’s also rather handy that there are two fine pubs and a microbrewery within a few minutes’ walk… Life on site is pretty simple, with a few amenities set up in the form of portable toilets, water taps, a chemical disposal point and a shower room. Barbecues are permitted and there’s ice pack freezing available to keep provisions cool.

What customers say

Peaceful, rural site with friendly owners. Praised for quiet atmosphere, proximity to West Somerset Steam Railway & Quantock Brewery. Flat pitches, woodland, free-roaming animals. Facilities noted as basic by some, but later reviews show improvements. Limited recycling noted.

Liked Great place! Warm welcome from owner Karen. Flat pitch with lovely views of orchard with chickens and geese roaming around the site. Very near to train station into Minehead and a great brewery 5 mins up the road with food truck outside! Had a wonderful relaxing weekend!

Disliked Was not keen on using shower facilities as not very private where they were positioned. Toilets were fine although the flushing water was like thick ink. One sink in ladies was out of order but this did not posse any issues. All in all the toilets were clean.

Liked Nice flat pitch with hook up
Friendly host
Good pub with food 5 minutes walk away
Steam railway also 5 minutes walk

Disliked Limited toilets, only one male cubicle
Internet and phone signal extremely poor, unable to conduct conversation and most of the time Internet wouldn’t connect - iPhone user - in the end I gave up trying. I think this is an area problem - once I was out of the immediate area I gave a connection.

Liked We loved the flat, open pitch we had near the woods. We got visited daily by the geese & chickens which was lovely, the owners left a big box of outdoor play equipment for the kids. We loved the honesty box for fresh fruit & veg, eggs along with cold drinks & snacks. Our son was there buying himself the snacks & drinks.
The site is very tranquil especially at night where you can hear the wildlife
A red kite came to visit each day over the woodland surrounding the campsite.bishops lydeard is a beautiful village with the heritage steam railway and a great Chinese takeaway away a rural life museum, beautiful churches and stunning country and woodland walks, we will be visiting again for a third time. Fantastic hosts.
The woodlands are owned by the campsite & they are always striving to improve the little paths so campers can enjoy it more. The hot water showers are great & there's always local, natural toiletries on hand to use along with an outside washing up station

Liked Good level open space. Good showers and complimentary washing up facilities. Friendly welcome and good local information. Great micro pub 5 min walk with food nights. Only 5 min walk to West Somerset Railway. Free range chickens wandering around.

Disliked The smell in the toilets was quite overwhelming. They were however cleaned daily.

Local attractions

Start local with a stroll up to the village to browse the farm shop, the Quantock Brewery, the tea rooms and the little rural life museum within Bishops Lydeard Mill. Just outside the village (but certainly worth travelling a mile for) is a smart hotel where you can pick up day passes for the swimming pool, spa and nine-hole golf course. If you need an excuse to book in for some pampering, perhaps a few long walks or bike rides would fit the bill? There are plenty of options in the nearby Quantock Hills National Landscape, around the Blackdown Hills National Landscape (20 minutes’ drive) or over in the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). And one mustn’t forget the coast – the South West Coast Path starts in Minehead (half an hour), and it’s got plenty of beachy activities too. A little inland from Minehead is the splendid Dunster Castle; other fab options for days out nearby might include horse riding (10 minutes from the site) or gentle strolls around Hestercombe House & Gardens (15 minutes).
