If you like to arrive in style on your holidays, this is certainly a place where you can do just that… Bishops Lydeard Caravan and Camping Site is one of those rare places where you can ride into town on a steam railway, thanks to the West Somerset Railway station a mere five minutes’ walk away. Those planning to ride the rails at a later point, meanwhile, should be pleased to hear that access in a more conventional manner is also straightforward, as the A358 passes fairly nearby. Either way, this is a rather splendid spot with pitches spread across a two-acre field surrounded by protected woodland just on the edge of the village. It’s all been set up in the grounds of the 18th-century Greenway House, a Grade II-listed building that was once part of the adjoining Sandhill Park estate. It’s now a family-run smallholding, so you’ll share the space with ducks, geese and chickens and there are more farm animals to spot in the surrounding fields. As well as being a top spot for train enthusiasts and those in search of farm stays, this place also has much to offer walkers, cyclists and folk travelling with four-legged companions, thanks to the plethora of pathways in the surrounds. And it’s also rather handy that there are two fine pubs and a microbrewery within a few minutes’ walk… Life on site is pretty simple, with a few amenities set up in the form of portable toilets, water taps, a chemical disposal point and a shower room. Barbecues are permitted and there’s ice pack freezing available to keep provisions cool.

Environmental set up inc refuse.
Complimentary toiletries and washing up liquid.
Friendly site owner.
Close proximity to micro brewery, pubs and public transport.

Em va agradar This campsite is a little gem. The location is spot on, the local village is great for food and drinks which is walkable and the added bonus was the steam train which is a 5 mins walk from campsite. The campsite has geese, chickens, cockerels and we also spotted a hedgehog and bats. There was also a stall for veg which you could buy supplies and the owner is super helpful and will guide you on where to go. Plenty of hot water for the showers.

No em va agradar The toilet block there seemed to be a slight odour in the ladies but my husband said his block was fine!.

Em va agradar Quiet location and near to the steam railway station, a brewery and a couple of pubs.
Ample provision of eco-friendly handwash, shower gels, shampoos and conditioner, along with washing-up liquid.

No em va agradar Portaloos (3), 2 others were roped shut and portashowers (4), there were probably not enough to cope with a full campsite and they didn't work too well with continuous push-on buttons and water temperature changing as the flow altered. A trailer of 4 ladies toilets was very basic. No undercover washing-up facilities or draining board.

Del gerent: Unfortunately the main sewage system does not extend to us as we live in an historical old property. We brought in a luxury toilet trailer last year and the ladies does have 4 proper flushing toilets, hand washing sinks, soap dispensers and electric hand dryers. We also have back up portaloos. There is also a 4 cubicle shower trailer with hot water sinks in each one. Plus a separate shower shack with pedestal sink and mirror. There was no additional charge for using the showers and we provide as you kindly commented luxury Faith in Nature shower products. Push buttons are fairly standard at most campsites to prevent wastage. The facilities are routinely checked and cleaned each day.

Em va agradar Only stayed one night, to break up the journey to Devon but would stay again. The only thing that lets it down is the portaloo toilets & cabin shower, but they were clean enough.
The nearby Quantock brewery taproom is good .!

Em va agradar Owners friendly. Site was tidy and spacious.
Good location for walks.
Facilities were kept clean.
Box of outdoor games were provided for the children (bonus)..

No em va agradar Toilet/shower facilities were adequate for a few campers but not for a full site.

Start local with a stroll up to the village to browse the farm shop, the Quantock Brewery, the tea rooms and the little rural life museum within Bishops Lydeard Mill. Just outside the village (but certainly worth travelling a mile for) is a smart hotel where you can pick up day passes for the swimming pool, spa and nine-hole golf course. If you need an excuse to book in for some pampering, perhaps a few long walks or bike rides would fit the bill? There are plenty of options in the nearby Quantock Hills National Landscape, around the Blackdown Hills National Landscape (20 minutes’ drive) or over in the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). And one mustn’t forget the coast – the South West Coast Path starts in Minehead (half an hour), and it’s got plenty of beachy activities too. A little inland from Minehead is the splendid Dunster Castle; other fab options for days out nearby might include horse riding (10 minutes from the site) or gentle strolls around Hestercombe House & Gardens (15 minutes).
