Peaceful grass pitches

  • Peaceful back-to-basics rural site in the village of Telscombe
  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach
  • Organic meat and free-range eggs available to buy from the farm
‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park. And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats. Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs. Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Brilliant, brilliant campsite.

I arrived late (in the dark) and not only were they nice about it, but they still met me and showed me to my pitch.

The toilet block is small but immaculate. Washing up sink outside, with hot water, a sponge and washing up liquid. There's even a phone number on the loo roll holder in case it has run out!

Just under 5k from Southease station, via a stretch of the South Downs Way. And you are rewarded with a lovely view over some hills and the sea, accompanied by some bleating from the sheep in the next door field. It is then about 2k down to the sea at Saltdene, which makes for a nice day's excursion.

The owners are in a motor home on site and dealt with noisy campers firmly once it got late (9-10ish).

Liked Very nice people who run it very clean toilet and shower nice setting

Disliked I just suppose non-electric pictures could be a bit cheaper but not saying it’s expensive. I know people have to make an income.

From the manager: thank you for your feedback.
we would like to have electric on all pitches but unfortunately it is not possible to pipe electricity from the farm all the way up to the campsite, also the authorities wont allow this as it is a green belt area.
i believe the site fees are average for the area.

Disliked Site is windy, so come prepared- a big tent on top pitch is not a good idea!

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked peaceful, friendly campsite neighbouring a sheep’s grazing field and overlooking the sea/south downs. good walking options off telescombe tye, running down to the cliffs and the pubs.
15 minute walk from a tesco express and bus stop into brighton also a plus.
good, clean facilities - toilets, showers, washing up station, drinking water. says poor water pressure but i was pleasantly surprised.
level enough ground and decent size pitches (on the smaller side)
nice to have “quiet hours” from 9pm and no cars from 12am
friendly and helpful couple manning the site! comforting to have them staying on site

Disliked only one sink for washing up, and i do tend to prefer sites that don’t allow parking on the pitch

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: thank you for your review.
we do welcome any kind of comments, ideas and comments to help us improve the site.
glad you enjoyed your stay.
the pitches are at least 10 x 10 meters which i thought was generous especially after comments from other campers saying other sites have smaller pitches, we will look into this.
there is another washing up station near the gate.
we would also prefer no parking on the pitch but unfortunately being a small site there is nowhere else for people to park.
many thanks for your feedback

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour. Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea. If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site. There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.
