General

  • Peaceful back-to-basics rural site in the village of Telscombe
  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach
  • Organic meat and free-range eggs available to buy from the farm

‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park.

And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats.

Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs.

Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Please note

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

At least one of the party members must be aged 16 or over.

The shower facilities are closed. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Please note that all rubbish must be taken home with you.

Gorgeous views of ocean and fields for miles.
Hosts were welcoming and so helpful. We needed an electric pitch and booked by mistake and host could not have been more kind.
Recommend for a peaceful place to totally switch off from city life.

The location was great, not far off the south downs way and nice and quiet. The communication with the owners was also very good as was the toilet and wash and water facilities.

    Disliked:

No dislikes, although the bottom area of the field did slope off so would have been a challenge in a tent.

Nothing special there, expensive and unorganised with wood delivering

From the manager...

Trust me the feeling is entirely mutual. We would not welcome anyone back who
1. expects us to deliver them wood at 9pm!
2. Leaves 2 bags of rubbish
3. leaves litter around their pitch
We only welcome customers who respect and love our site as much as we do.

Wonderful site with view over the downs and the sea if the weather is calm, and some sheltered spots in the lee of a stand of trees if it's windy. Friendly management always happy to help get supplies or give advice. Access to great walking or to the coast.

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour.

Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea.

If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site.

There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.

Must see

  • Brighton Marina (4.0 miles)
  • Volks Railway (5.4 miles)
  • Brighton Sea Life Centre (5.5 miles)

  • Monk's House (2.2 miles)
  • Alfriston Clergy House (7.2 miles)
