  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach

‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park. And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats. Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs. Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Liked Superb location - walks from the site and great views. Very clean site as well. Easy check-in and staff on hand to help if needed. Pitches are nice and large. You catch the sunrise and sunset up at Stud Farm.

Liked Great views and lovely walks on the downs from the site. Toilet facilities were adequate. Spacious grassy pitches.

Disliked No rubbish disposal or recycling facilities which is very inconvenient. Considering the price charged for the pitch this should be a given.

sorry that you was unhappy about taking your rubbish home, but most of our regulars would rather take their rubbish home than pay even higher prices for their pitch, it doesn't smell if you tie it up well in plastic bags.

Liked Great campsite, friendly atmosphere. Renting a firepit was definitely a highlight. We really enjoyed our stay here and was able to switch off and enjoy nature.

Liked I was working as a Rescue Tech and medical cover on the south coast for the week. The campsite wardens were fantastic and really helpful. The showers and facilities were great as were the views. I work regularly on the south coast and will definitely use this place again next year.

Disliked I really wish it was open all year!

Liked We had a very enjoyable couple of nights at Stud Farm. The facilities are basic but kept very clean and good hot water if used at the advertised times. Only two showers and two toilets each for men and women, so i can imagine queues forming when busy! 45 minute walk to the beach and 60 mins to Rodmell.

Liked Revisiting the Stud Farm campsite as it’s such a great location. Views and peace, which is why I visit. Always a warm welcome from the team, and the facilities were again spotless, the showers hot.
For breakfast there’s an amazing cafe right in the centre of the village, a few minutes walk. For groceries I took the pleasant and scenic walk around the field along the track to a tesco express 15 minutes away, gps it.
In 2 hours you can enjoy a walk over beautiful Sussex downs towards the seafront at Saltdean, drop down to the delightful sea path that stretches along to Brighton Marina and on to Brighton. Had a quick lunch and walked back, 22km and well worth it.
Thanks again to the team. I left to avoid the rain after enjoying the fantastic sunshine. Typical uk weather.

many people do come for the peace and quiet along with our no noise/no music after 9pm policy makes for a good stay for people that don't stay up too late, and the cafe is a most welcome addition which our managers have worked very hard to make it a reality which everyone loves.

Liked A huge open field with very large sized pitches and the most wonderful views. Loved watching and hearing the sheep and alpacas in the surrounding fields. The site was easy to find and we were able to just rock up and pitch up. You can order breakfast baskets, wood, fire pits and bbq food etc from Stud farm and there is also a lovely cafe just down the road. There appear to be many stunning walks in the area and we would love to have stayed for longer to really explore these. There are 2 toilets for men and 2 for ladies plus 2 showers which were quite roomy and lovely temperature and pressure. Love how it's environmentally friendly so that hot water is only available for a few hours in the morning and again in the afternoon

Disliked There are no bins but this did not bother us as we were happy to take our rubbish away and understand why they would not have bins spoiling the natural landscape

the cafe is stud farms newest endeavor and our managers have worked really hard to make this a reality, many people state that it is a much welcome addition to the village and the campsite.
we do have many regulars that would rather take their rubbish home with them, rather than pay higher pitch prices to have bins.

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour. Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea. If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site. There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.
