  • Back to basics rural site in a peaceful Warwickshire woodland
  • Birmingham, Tamworth and Drayton Manor within half an hour's drive
  • Secluded forest floor pitches; a few minutes' walk from a farm shop
Hear that? The rustling leaves, the birdsong, the crunch of branches underfoot? Sounds like the woods are calling… Nightingales Rustic Camping is a back to basics site where you can ensconce yourself among the trees at a peaceful Warwickshire woodland spot – this is a place that has plenty of room between pitches, and with so much thick foliage about there's a fair bit of privacy too. The pitches here all have access to well-maintained communal toilet and shower facilities. There are designated spots where you can light up a fire as well (it doesn't get much more atmospheric than sitting together around flickering flames as the setting sun streams through the trees…). Nightingales Rustic Camping is a few minutes' walk from a farm shop where you can pick up a whole host of top-quality produce, and it's about a 10-minute drive to nearby Atherstone and its many amenities, which include a railway station, supermarket, restaurants and a leisure centre. Although this site is pleasingly rural in atmosphere, Nightingales Rustic Camping is in a very convenient location – Birmingham city centre, Drayton Manor Theme Park and the market town of Tamworth can all be reached by road in under half an hour.

Local attractions

There are heaps of options near Nightingales Rustic Camping for busy bees who want to stick to the local area. For a restorative round of the green, take yourself down to Atherstone Golf Club (10 minutes' drive); tiddlers who find the games there rather slow-paced for their liking can be taken to the town's swimming pool (10 minutes) instead. Also close by are Kingsbury Water Park (15 minutes) and Hartshill Hayes Country Park (15 minutes), where there are birds to spot, picnics to be had and a load of nature to take in. More outdoor jaunts can be had at Tamworth Castle (25 minutes), a fearsome Norman fortress overlooking the bustling market town. And don't feel that you have to eschew indoor times just because you're sleeping in the open air – the slopes of SnowDome indoor ski centre (25 minutes) and fab aquatic displays at the National Sea Life Centre (30 minutes) are not to be missed. Kids been on their best behaviour, or need an incentive to keep them that way? The promise of a trip to Drayton Manor Theme Park (25 minutes) should do the job.

Field stay unpowered grass and earth site (pet friendly)

Liked: Really surprised by the great facilities here, the fantastic farm shop with an array of wonderful produce, the warm welcome we were greeted with. The free showers and toilets near the shop was a great addition as well as I think the cleanest portaloos I've ever been in dotted throughout the meadow fields. We'll definitely be back

The Meadow unpowered grass site (no pets)

Liked: Very spacious, available portaloo and farm shop. The 2 girls I met were fab, very friendly. They sell meat and wood.

Disliked: There's only 2 showers and 1 washing up sink. They all could do with updating and cleaning. I wouldn't come in the high season

The Meadow unpowered grass site (no pets)

Liked: The site is across large fields which are part of a working farm. You pick where you pitch and there is so much space! The site is mainly flat, it’s clean with portaloos spaced regularly. If you aren’t a fan on portaloos, there is a functional toilet and shower block on the farm itself. The fire-pits are a lovely touch and it was wonderful to lie on the grass and look at the stars listening to the fire crackling. My daughter, her friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and we will definitely be back. It’s in a great location and very reasonably priced! Brilliant!

Disliked: My only niggle was there was no toilet roll (or spare rolls) in the toilet block during the night.

Field stay unpowered grass and earth site (pet friendly)

Liked: Pitches are as big as you like! Lots of privacy and space. We camped under a huge oak tree, near a pond which was full of life - lots of bugs, frogs, and newts! Well stocked farm shop with everything you may need. Porta loos and also "proper" toilets. Kitchen area with toaster, fridge, kettle, microwave and washing up facilities with hot water. More than we expected and could have asked for. Small woodland to explore. Peaceful. Lovely sunrise and sunset

The Meadow unpowered grass site (no pets)

Liked: Initially hated the fact that I had been told to camp in the field a land there was only a couple of other men camping there when I had booked the meadow. BUT after the first night I loved the solitude and the views from the hill. I actually became annoyed when others arrived the second night 😂. It’s rustic but the clue is in the name!
