Nightingales Rustic Camping: Off-grid holidays in Warwickshire

General

  • Back to basics rural site in a peaceful Warwickshire woodland
  • Birmingham, Tamworth and Drayton Manor within half an hour's drive
  • Secluded forest floor pitches; a few minutes' walk from a farm shop

Hear that? The rustling leaves, the birdsong, the crunch of branches underfoot? Sounds like the woods are calling…

Nightingales Rustic Camping is a back to basics site where you can ensconce yourself among the trees at a peaceful Warwickshire woodland spot – this is a place that has plenty of room between pitches, and with so much thick foliage about there's a fair bit of privacy too.

The pitches here all have access to well-maintained communal toilet and shower facilities. There are designated spots where you can light up a fire as well (it doesn't get much more atmospheric than sitting together around flickering flames as the setting sun streams through the trees…).

Nightingales Rustic Camping is a few minutes' walk from a farm shop where you can pick up a whole host of top-quality produce, and it's about a 10-minute drive to nearby Atherstone and its many amenities, which include a railway station, supermarket, restaurants and a leisure centre.

Although this site is pleasingly rural in atmosphere, Nightingales Rustic Camping is in a very convenient location – Birmingham city centre, Drayton Manor Theme Park and the market town of Tamworth can all be reached by road in under half an hour.

The owners were really friendly and helpful, laid back nature of the site, size of pitches, the wood , the shop and the location were all great! The portaloos were well positioned snd cleaned daily. We couldn’t camp in wood as those pitches were booked but had a lovely walk in it and looked like great place to camp!

    Disliked:

The multiple noisy groups camped all around us! I’m an experienced camper that has been part of a group of young people camping and have no issue with campfire’s music chatting etc! However this was more like camping in a night club until 4.30 am in the morning on the Friday night , very loud groups playing music and shouting over it! To be fair we mentioned to owners as did few other people and it stopped about 2 on the sat night which was an improvement!! Also don’t forget the insect repellent lots of biting insects due to the trees!!

Very friendly, found us a nice quiet pitch out of the way. Nice farm shop on site. Area was very quiet and the skies are very dark at night, good for seeing the stars.

Secluded, a real 'in the woods' experience, but still able to park handily close to the pitch. I was there with two boys, aged 9 and 12, and we all loved it. We played football and basketball and generally explored the surrounding countryside. Liked having the picnic table and fire close to the tent.

    Disliked:

There is a toilet area with a sink in the centre of the wood. The rubbish bags left outside had accumulated and squirrels had been foraging in them, so there was rubbish strewn around which wasn't so nice.

Specifically wanted a hammock friendly site when booking and the clearing in the woods was ideal! The owners are amazingly friendly and helpful and took me directly to my pitch. Extra caution was advised about storing food due to squirrels trying to raid items not packed properly in plastic containers (but thankfully had read other comments on here beforehand) and sure enough they visited several times ;)
Drinking water is located near to the farm shop, so I filled up when passing in the cat as could be quite heavy bit washing water is located in the woods.
Although you can't generally see other pitches due to shrub and trees, sound travels more in woods, so chopping of logs can be heard fairly clearly (so if staying, do this before the evening ;) )
I most certainly will be returning!

    Disliked:

Possibly need to add material markers on cut through to car spots as gaps in barbed wire fence may not be so clear in poor light or for those with younger kids...

Lovely setting, beautiful views (great especially the sun sets).
Woodland is great for the kids to run about in playing hide a seek.
Safe setting generally, lots of long grass and apparantly there are no ticks, and not really very many biting insects. Saw lots of butterflies though.
Farm staff were very helpful and farm shop food was delicious.
A portaloo was positioned at about every 3rd pitch (huge pitches) while the shower and water tap was near the shop.

    Disliked:

Slightly grubby shower block (which was clearly work in progress) and the shower was fantastic which more than made up for the need for a clean.

Spent 3 nights here & loved every second of it. We were meant to be on the field but luckily got a place in the forest which was wonderful. The pitches in the forest are apart so you have your own privacy & can make your own little camp. Had a fire lit every night which added to the experience. Toilets were basic but clean which is what you want! Everyone was very friendly & helpful on the farm/campsite & came round to check on us a few times to make sure we we’re doing okay. Farm shop was good, supplied us with what we needed. Watch out for squirrels though, they got into our tent & ate all of our bread, so had to keep the food in our zipped up bedroom area. Overall a great stay & would certainly return to camp here again!

Local attractions

There are heaps of options near Nightingales Rustic Camping for busy bees who want to stick to the local area. For a restorative round of the green, take yourself down to Atherstone Golf Club (10 minutes' drive); tiddlers who find the games there rather slow-paced for their liking can be taken to the town's swimming pool (10 minutes) instead.

Also close by are Kingsbury Water Park (15 minutes) and Hartshill Hayes Country Park (15 minutes), where there are birds to spot, picnics to be had and a load of nature to take in. More outdoor jaunts can be had at Tamworth Castle (25 minutes), a fearsome Norman fortress overlooking the bustling market town.

And don't feel that you have to eschew indoor times just because you're sleeping in the open air – the slopes of SnowDome indoor ski centre (25 minutes) and fab aquatic displays at the National Sea Life Centre (30 minutes) are not to be missed. Kids been on their best behaviour, or need an incentive to keep them that way? The promise of a trip to Drayton Manor Theme Park (25 minutes) should do the job.
