West Stow Pods are ideally situated for scenic cycle paths: long-distance bike routes around King’s Forest or Newmarket, as well as mountain biking around Thetford or Brandon Country Park. The pods have outdoor decking and a barbecue area outside, while inside there’s a double bed, sofa bed, wet room with toilet and shower, kitchenette and flat screen Freeview TV with DVD player.

Bird watching

Higher Moor Farm Campsite, Weymouth, Dorset

Higher Moor Farm Campsite is five minutes away from the RSPB reserve Radipole Lake, which has regular events, family activities and a visitor centre. The site is home to many bird species including bittern, bearded tit, little egret, pochard and sedge warbler. There’s also the popular Studland Beach & Nature Reserve along the coast at Swanage where visitors can spot birds, wildlife and wild flowers and a mute swan colony at Abbotsbury Swannery.

Astronomy

PoSHHuts, Hexham, Northumberland

Northumberland National Park was awarded Dark Sky Park status in December 2013 and is now Europe's largest, and nearby Kielder Observatory has regular events for the astronomically inclined. PoSHHuts, Hexham, are posh shepherd’s huts offering a prime stargazing spot right outside the door. These luxury huts offer the perfect place to stargaze in style.  They are outdoorsy enough for visitors to feel like they are in the heart of the action yet luxury enough to keep visitors warm and cosy.  The huts feature kingsized beds, chandeliers, woodburning stove, designer kitchen and an en-suite shower.

Ghost hunting

Moorlands Caravan Park, Oldham, Lancashire

Fans of TV’s Most Haunted will recall presenter Yvette Fielding deemed the episode filmed at Pendle Hill the scariest she ever made. Visitors to the region may get a chill down their spine delving into witchcraft, mysterious deaths and hangings. They’ll soon warm up in the heated pods at Moorlands Caravan Park, 20 miles away.

Walking

The Quiet Site, Penrith, Cumbria

The Quiet Site has pods and pitches with magnificent views of Ullswater, which is popular among hikers and walkers.  The site is within easy reach of some of the Lake District’s most famous fells including Skiddaw, Helvelyn and Scafell Pike. The site also has a children’s playground and soft play area, as well as a pub.

Price: Pods from £35 per night for up to four people; grass and hardstanding pitches from £16 per night for two people; bell tents from £40 per night for up to four people.

Adrenaline/outdoor adventure 

North Lodge, Pembrokeshire

The 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coastal Path has plenty to tempt adrenaline junkies, including walking and hiking, clifftop expeditions, golfing, sailing, windsurfing, coasteering, sea kayaking, sea fishing and horse riding. North Lodge is a spacious site which limits numbers to prevent overcrowding.  Pitches are laid out across 4.5 acres of grassland, just 10 minutes from the beaches and coastline.  An insulated log cabin provides year round accommodation and comes fully equipped with furniture and fittings.  Guests just need to bring sleeping bags and towels.  The cabin can sleep up to five people.

Price: Cabin costs from £40 per night or for true campers there is also the option of tent and touring pitches from just £15 per night.

 

Motorcycling

Lee Wick Cottages and Camping, Essex

Many searches on the Pitchup.com website are for motorcycle-friendly sites, and Lee Wick Cottages and Camping is one that fits the bill. It’s a farm and stables with holiday cottages, camping and glamping options, as well as a fishing reservoir.
