Local attractions

When visiting Dolores, you can't miss the Anasazi Heritage Center, a 40,000-square-foot museum chronicling the life of the Ancestral Puebloan civilization. The Heritage Center is also home to the Visitor Center for the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

Dolores is filled with recreational opportunities thanks to the boating and fishing paradise of McPhee Lake, located only 18 miles from the campsite. The San Juan National Forest is also around the corner from Groundhog Lake RV and Campground Park, providing unlimited opportunities for hiking, biking and fly fishing. There is also the Boggy Draw, a popular spot for mountain bikers.

Guests can also visit Dolores, a former major railroad town serving Durango and Ridgway. There is now a replica of the original train depot open to visitors. The restored Galloping Goose narrow-gauge railcar is also worth a visit.

Other attractions include the nature wonders of Mesa Verde National Park located a two-hour drive away from the site.
