  • Family-friendly park in stunning Finger Lakes region of New York state
  • Half an hour’s drive from Ithaca, Tioga Downs and New York wine trails
  • Heated pool, lake, fishing and boating pond, massages for guests
Dreaming of days out in the wilderness, clambering around tree-filled hilltops and floating peacefully down mighty rivers? Walk out of your dreams and into that reality at Aspen Family Campground, a family-friendly spot five minutes’ drive from the town of Candor in Tioga County, New York. This is the Finger Lakes region of New York state, so you can expect walking, hiking and biking routes, parks, and watery vistas aplenty. Strike out from home base for scenic explores if you want to, or get out on the water for kayaking and boating on the Susquehana river, 20 minutes away. If you’re seeking a more sedate experience, stick around the campground for traipsing by the lake, boating and fishing in the four and a half-acre pond, or strolling through the 100 wooded acres, then cool off with a dip in the pool. Achieve peak zen by making an appointment (or two) with the in-house masseuse the second you arrive. Once you’re ready for some munch, get that barbecue sizzling and get to grilling, then settle in next to the firepit while you get to know some of the other guests.

Local attractions

Fans of the vino, raise your glasses and say cheers to this: you’re in wine country, and there are three wine trails within an easy jaunt. It just so happens that the closest trail to base is American’s first and longest surviving, so grab your designated driver by the hand and start sipping your way along the Cayuga Lake trail half an hour’s drive away. Not a huge wine fan? Some of the spots along the trail do double duty as cideries, meaderies, distilleries and taprooms, so you should have no problem finding something that’s more to your taste. If none of them are making you want to take a celebratory swig, venture into Ithaca, half an hour away, for even more wineries and breweries to wet your whistle. Of course, there’s plenty more to do in Ithaca than drink, so explore Robert Treman State Park, follow the Cascadilla Gorge Trail, take a campus tour at Cornell, wander the botanic gardens, nab some fresh produce and local eats at the Ithaca Farmer’s Market, or dip in and out of museums and galleries for a taste of culture. Those with a competitive streak should strike out for gold at Tioga Downs racecourse and casino or get a little more high octane with track days and races at Watkins Glen, all within 45 minutes, but if you’ve got kids holding you back from gambling it all away, Rosamund Gifford Zoo (an hour and a half away in Syracuse), Side Hill Acres goat farm and Iron Kettle Farm might be safer bets.
