  • Wild camping on 15 acres of woodland near Benzonia, Michigan
  • A 10-minute drive to Crystal Mountain Resort; Lake Michigan 40 minutes
  • Off-grid forest pitches with campfire rings and firewood provided
It’s easy to make yourself at home at Camp Squid near Benzonia in north-western Michigan. As this is wild camping, the site owners give you a tour of the grounds on arrival and you get to choose between pitches in Squid Woods or find a specal pitch all of your very own. Just pick a spot you like the look of and put the tent up. Hey presto – you’re done. If your vehicle won’t make it to your chosen pitch – there is 15 acres of woodland on offer, after all, including the shaded Pine Tree Lane – then the owners will help out by shipping all your gear to you themselves. Two tents are permitted per pitch – handy if you’re camping with friends or family. This is off-grid wild camping, so bring torches and a supply of batteries to make your way around the site after dark. With firepits at every site (firewood is provided), you’ll soon have the s’mores on the go, and on clear nights you can keep warm, lie back and watch the stars glittering in the sky far above.

Local attractions

There’s much to see and do round the shores of Lake Michigan: head to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (40 minutes’ drive) for coastal walks, or exercise the dog on Otter Creek’s pet-friendly Esch Beach (half an hour). Other waterside sporty pastimes include kayaking down the Platte River (20 minutes) and hiking the Pyramid Point Trail (50 minutes) for views to the North and South Manitou islands on the lake. Turning inland, sample artisan whiskeys and gins at Iron Fish Distillery (10 minutes), while St Ambrose Cellars (15 minutes) has a choice of home-produced meads as well as live-music nights. Crystal Mountain Resort (10 minutes) is a popular hangout for ski-ing in winter and golf all year – and if you’re keen to improve your handicap, there’s a cluster of golf courses within 15 minutes’ drive. Historic Cherry Bowl Drive-In Theatre (15 minutes) opened in 1953 and is one of only a few drive-ins left in Michigan – it’s fun for all the family with a snack bar, kids’ play areas, beach volleyball and a run-around area for your canine pals.
