General
- Family site with mountain views in the town of Raron
- A couple of minutes' walk from a cable car station for mountain walks
- Kids' club with a busy programme of varied activities
Ah, summer in the Swiss Alps – what could be finer than sitting quietly with the sun on your face, breathing the fresh air and listening to the sound of… the kids moaning that they’re bored.
Yes, it’s safe to say that the generations often have different priorities when it comes to holiday requirements. The canny folk at Camping Santa Monica have taken note of this issue and come up with a busy programme of kids’ activities that should banish any impending clouds of boredom – crafts, sports, dancing and other fun times should keep them entertained while you have a much-needed relax for a couple of hours (perhaps with a book on the sun terrace?).
With family harmony restored, there are plenty of fun things you can get up to all together. Splash around in the open-air swimming pool (with a paddling pool for the tinies), play table tennis or chess, or gather some neighbours for a game of football or volleyball. There’s also a playground and sand pit for further fun, or you could all head to the stream that passes through the site for a bit of paddling.
When it’s time for eats, head over to the restaurant, where again there should be enough choice to keep all ages and tastes happy. If you’re feeling sociable, try out a traditional family-sized dish of cheesy raclette to share; if you’ve all got different tastes, pick your own dishes from the menu of local and international dishes.
Cooking for yourselves? Barbecues are welcome, and you can order meat from the local butcher to be delivered for your alfresco feast. Other necessaries such as fresh bread and drinks can be purchased from the site’s mini market, or from the nearest supermarket (five minutes’ drive).
Additional amenities at Camping Santa Monica include a launderette, a washing-up area and a couple of toilet blocks with toilets, showers and disabled access. Sadly, you may find that by the end of the day your kids are too worn out from all the fun to help with the washing-up – a small price to pay in return for familial bliss though, ja?

Local attractions
Venturing away from the on-site activities, there are loads of family-friendly attractions nearby. 45 minutes’ drive away is the Feeblitz toboggan run, where you can zoom down the hillside at speeds of up to 40km per hour. Also 45 minutes away, the SiSu Family Park has a petting zoo, kids’ climbing course and tubing slope among its features.
Travelling to the resort of Zermatt can’t be done by car – you’ll need to take the train to Täsch (40 minutes’ drive) and complete your journey by a shuttle train through some pretty spectacular scenery, looking out towards the Matterhorn. Once you’ve arrived, head to the Family Fun Park for a treetop adventure course and ziplining.
Another fun way to spend an afternoon is to make the 40-minute to Leukerbad and hire some Monstertrottinnette bikes – a special all-terrain scooter with huge tyres. Take them up to the top of the Torrent cable car and prepare for an adrenaline-fuelled descent back to town (don’t worry – they have brakes).
Naturally, given the landscape, you can also find quieter natural activities in the surrounding mountains. Friendly staff can advise on hiking routes starting from the site, including gentle strolls along the banks of the River Rhône, half a kilometre away. You can also use the cable car a couple of minutes’ walk away from the site to reach the ski stations of Eischoll or Unterbäch, where further hiking trails start.
Relaxing spa wallows and family fun days can both be had at the Thermalquellen waterpark in Brigerbad, 15 minutes away. The outdoor thermal pool complex has a bouncy castle, paddling pool and 182m-long waterslide, while the indoor spa is an adults-only area with swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, hammam and an atmospheric grotto bath embedded in the rock.
