  • Naturists welcome; sauna, hot tub and natural bathing pool on site
If you’re after a peaceful break in gorgeous natural surroundings, it’s likely that the name Relax in the Forest - Camper Life will catch your eye. And indeed it should, as this adults-only Valais site makes a fine place to chill out and a great base for things like woodland walks and birdwatching. And which forest is it that you’ll be relaxing in, you ask? Well, it’s the one covering vast swathes of Pfyn-Finges Natural Regional Park, just across the Illbach river, where woodland walks and challenging hiking trails take you past small village chapels and viewpoints. You can make your way to Pfyn-Finges via the Bhutanbrücke suspension bridge (as long as you have a head for heights). And don’t forget to pack your binoculars, for this is an area of intense bird activity and you might catch glimpses of colourful kingfishers and bee-eaters. Back at the site after a strenuous woodland hike, you might like to soak aching limbs in the communal hot tub, hit the sauna or take a dip in the natural bathing pond. If you fancy it, you can make that a skinny dip – the site welcomes naturists. Also welcome here are well-behaved dogs, who can stretch their paws at the site’s dog park. Other shared facilities include showers and a kitchen/dining area where you can prep and eat meals (pick up supplies from shops and bakeries five minutes’ drive away in Susten – or stop off there to eat in one of the restaurants).

Local attractions

Much of your time is likely to be taken up exploring the Pfyn-Finges Natural Regional Park, which has all sorts of hiking trails for various capabilities. Keen hikers may like to climb up Torrenthorn (40 minutes’ drive) or follow the 17-kilometre Chapel Trail around five villages, while more leisurely walkers try the Bear Trail from Oberems (25 minutes) or wander along the six-kilometre Wine Trail from Salgesch (10 minutes). A couple of local sights not to miss include the Bhutanbrücke (10 minutes’ walk away), where prayer flags symbolise the friendship between this canton and its mountainous cousin in Bhutan, and the Niouc suspension footbridge (20 minutes’ drive), one of Europe’s highest bridges at 190 metres. The Observatoire François-Xavier Bagnoud (50 minutes), meanwhile, is the place to learn about the skies overhead. Montreux (an hour), on the banks of Lake Geneva, is worth a trip – whether you’re looking to see its lakeside Château de Chillon or indulging a love of music at the Queen Studio Experience (look out for the statue of Freddie Mercury as well…) Closer to home, Leuk (five minutes) has riverside walks, a golf course and an extraordinary ossuary housing more than 20,000 skulls.
