  • Right on the shores of a Dalälven river lake
  • Great fishing opportunities with pike, walleye and perch to land
  • Hire a motorboat, canoe or kayak
Barbecueing by the lake is almost a national sport in the part of Sweden belonging to Gävleborg County's Färnebofjärden Camping, say its amicable owners – and it'll be fish on the menu as its lakeside location is one of the most famed angling waters in the country. The site is on the spectacular shores of one of the lakes of the Dalälven river, part of a vast 200-kilometre angling area that's stuffed to the gills with over 30 fishy species such as salmon, trout, pike and perch. Grayling and trout fishing is available nearby too in the nearby rapids of the Gysinge river. This lush locale is also a wildlife haven, where you should be able to spot moose, beavers, otters and deer, around the lake and in its surroundings in the Färnebofjärden National Park. Hiking and biking trails are in the park as well, and if you fancy a city day or are coming from the airport, Stockholm is within a couple of hours' drive. In among all these excellent and scenic highlights are the site's leisurely options, including a sauna barrel-hut, bikes for hire and a trampoline – or you might decide just to potter down to Färnebofjärden Camping's small lakeside beach for snoozing and sunbathing... Barbecues are – of course – allowed on site; if you hanker after something other than your freshly landed fish, the local town three kilometres away has a pizzeria, bakery and grocery shop.

Local attractions

You'll likely want to fish, fish and fish some more from this stunning location, among one of the best-known and popular angling areas in all of Sweden. After that, angle some more at the nearby rivers of Dal or Gysinge, for species including trout, salmon and grayling. Watersports aplenty are all around too – take your pick from kayaking, motorboating, canoeing, swimming and more – and loads of hiking and cycling trails are in the Färnebofjärden National Park, including some in the immediate area of the site. If you're a wildlife watcher and/or twitcher, you're in a top spot, for the national park is a birdwatching haven, with over 200 species of birds including terns, swans, eagles and ospreys over its 10,000 hectares of forest, floodplains and lowlands. You could also go on a beaver-spotting safari in the local area, available in August and September.
