Pull on your explorer’s hat, lace up your walking boots and get ready for tons of adventures during your stay at Björsbo Forest and Lake Hideaways, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the village of Kulltorp in Götaland’s Jönköping county. Björsbo is a prime spot to use as a base for hiking, biking and riding, and you can get started even before you arrive by booking a guided horseback ride through the Björsbo-Sonakull area. If that’s not your speed, Store Mosse National Park (the largest marsh area in southern Sweden) is 15 minutes from Björsbo and its hiking trails are well worth exploring; along with the walks, its popular birdwatching tower is a twitcher's paradise. Once you’ve explored the area around the site, make your way back to base. Björsbo is on the spot of a former croft and, if you know where to look, you can spend a diverting afternoon finding all the signs and remains left behind by the hard-working forestry people who lived here long ago. Step away from the hunt for some truly relaxed moments: bring along your rod and reel, buy a licence from reception and try your luck at the on-site lake (or one of the others within easy walking distance of Björsbo). When you land something, you can plop it on the barbecue and grill it up for dinner, but don’t worry if your luck’s not in… stock up on emergency supplies at the supermarket in Kulltorp, or try out the nearby restaurants.

Hiking and riding not enough activity for you? Head to Isaberg Mountain Resort, 25 minutes’ drive from Björsbo Forest and Lake Hideaways, for mountain biking, treetop adventuring, Segway off-roading, adventure golf, canoeing and kayaking. To add a treasure hunter vibe to your visit, see if you can find some of the geocaches squirreled away at the resort. For something requiring a little less energy use, get a feel for the history of this part of Sweden with stops at Gislaveds Industrimuseum, Big Bengt Museum and Hyltens Industrial Museum, all within 20 minutes of the site, then corral a few horses and ride over to the High Chaparral Wild-West themed park. Need something more high octane? Try to time your visit for a track day at the nearby Scandinavian Raceway. If you’re up for a longer jaunt, pile in the car and make the hour-long drive to Jönköping, a city on the shores of Lake Vättern, to poke around the Jönköpings läns museum, the Match Museum (the world’s only museum dedicated to matchsticks), the modern art museum and (one for petrolheads, perhaps) the Husqvarna factory museum.
