  • Luxury wooden lodge in Småland Forest, 15 minutes’ drive from Hestra
  • Store Mosse National Park 35 minutes’ drive; High Chaparral 40 minutes
  • Barbecue and woodfired oven; dinner hampers available; private hot tub
Just imagine a glossy, wood-and-glass hideaway right in the middle of Jönköping County’s Småland Forest. One where you’ll have peaceful days all to yourselves, lake views from your private decking and starry, starry skies on clear nights. It’s yours at Bönabo Norrgård, where the stylish Nöjders Ro lodge awaits, surrounded by trees and yet only 15 minutes’ drive from shops and restaurants in Hestra. Here you can follow woodland trails, soak in the hot tub, and then crawl into your comfortable double bed on the mezzanine floor before waking up refreshed after a sound night’s sleep. Whether you choose to linger on site all day (and who would blame you?) or get out exploring during your stay at Bönabo Norrgård, you’ll have a luxurious base amid pristine nature to enjoy in your downtime. There’s no electricity, so this is your chance to cook outdoors or on the woodfired stove – order dinner hampers packed with locally reared meats from the site owners ahead of time. While you’ll also need to heat hot water for the shower yourself, everything else – from firewood and kindling to made-up beds and cooking utensils – is all provided for you.

Local attractions

Get out to stretch your legs in the unspoilt bog country of Store Mosse National Park (35 minutes’ drive), where you can follow raised wooden walkways while keeping a look out for cranes, eagles and elusive moose. If the kids are with you, take the Path of the Forest Trolls from Naturum Visitor Centre (also 35 minutes), which leads past sculptures of mythical creatures, or join a longer hike around Lake Kävsjön to spy on the abundant birdlife. When you’re visiting in winter, get your daily exercise on the slopes at Isaberg Mountain Resort (15 minutes), which morphs into an outdoors hub for disc golf, treetop rope courses and mountain biking during the summer months. All the family can channel their inner cowboys/girls at High Chaparral (40 minutes), a Wild West theme park where activities include panning for gold, holding up a bank at gunpoint and taking a journey through the backcountry on a vintage steam train.
