  • Remote site surrounded by stunning scenery in Gran Canaria’s wild west
  • Within 300 metres of Tasartico beach; transport services available
  • Restaurant on site, plus outdoor spaces for yoga and meditation
Not into hols at built-up seaside resorts housing hundreds of other people? Then get over to scenic and spiritual Blue Ocean Camp on Gran Canaria… This site, a five-minute walk from tiny Tasartico beach, is the only one at the island’s protected western Güi Güi nature reserve. Down by the shores in this wild area, try a bit of stand-up paddleboarding or surfing on the water or hike over to the remote – and almost always pretty much deserted – Güi Güi beach along the coast on a roam that tends to take around two and a half hours (so make sure to pack plenty of water). This region doesn’t have the mass of shops and restaurants found at resorts on the rest of the island, but fresh and organic local food’s sorted at the site’s One World Restaurant; eat your meals here while swapping travel tales with other guests or take it over to an outdoor terrace for alfresco munchies. Another of the site’s communal open-air spaces is set up for stargazing – as the region’s so free of people and artificial lighting, the night’s sky’s stunning here. By day, this spot also makes a peaceful place for practicing yoga and meditation or just watching shearwaters flying about under the big open skies…

Non-electric gravel tent or trailer tent pitch

Local attractions

Because western Gran Canaria is remote, a hol on this part of the island is more about the slow life – think gentle walks on the beach, days trying out watersports and strolls past ancient caves along the coast. If you’re seeking sights, there are plenty scattered across the region, however, including the dunes of Maspalomas an hour and 20-minute drive (for riding camels towards a clear-water lagoon) and the grand gardens of the Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo an hour and 50 minutes on the other side of the island. If you’re craving crowds after all the remoteness, towns to traipse towards include the 15th-century Vegueta with its art galleries and higgledy-piggledy architecture near the capital, Las Palmas, around an hour and 50 minutes’ drive and Puerto de Mogán, closer by at 55 minutes away, for its bright white houses and cute canal bridges…
