  • Well-appointed site by the beach, 5km from Vilagarcía de Arousa
  • Two kilometres from the rare bay forests on Cortegada Island
  • Next door to a kitesurfing centre offering rentals and lessons
On the Spanish coast, near Vilagarcía de Arousa, in Spain's Pontevedra province, with direct access to golden sands and next door to a kitesurfing centre…. lies Camping Río Ulla, a Galician seafront site in prime position for coastal days. Within a simple stroll of here too is the comely – and clam – town of Carril is, a place so famed for its seafood that it has a festival dedicated to clams (held every year in August). Supermarket supplies (lemon and black pepper for Galicia fish, perhaps?) can be sourced at Vilagarcía de Arousa about 10 minutes' drive away, or within about half an hour on two wheels; hire bikes on site to pedal forth. More local seafood as well as other foodie options covering snacks, light bites and full meals are at the Camping Río Ulla restaurant, or you can fry up fish and other tasty regional eats at the covered barbecue area. Río Ulla also has a small shop for essentials; fresh bread can be ordered for delivery too. And now, perhaps it might be time to stir into (a bit of) action? This is a top stretch of coast for watersports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, so start off at the kitesurfing centre next to the site for lessons if you need them, or kit hire if you're already adept. Less hair-raisingly, there are walks and bike rides around Castrogudin Reservoir to be had, or you could potter along a sandy causeway to reach the trails, beaches and abandoned hamlet of Cortegada Island. Paintballing, if there's a member of your party you particularly dislike/are keen to cover in paint, is 15 kilometres away at Campo do Lobo. Around the site, bounce a ball around the tennis or basketball areas on the multisports pitch, determine to finally master pétanque or ping pong, or dive into the outdoor pool; there are sun loungers alongside if all your energy is used up. A varied programme of activities like zumba classes and watersports workshops runs throughout the week; karaoke and family nights are held on Saturdays, and for entertaining your own self under your own steam, there’s a recreation area in a big marquee with board games, a wifi service and plug sockets for your digital devices.

Local attractions

It's a couple of kilometres to the coast and along a sandy causeway from here to reach Cortegada Island, an almost tidal isle making up part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. The north side of the island is the site of the biggest bay laurel forest in Europe – and the last wild laurel forest of Galicia – while the islands in general are a Special Protection Area for birds: go to see what you can see flitting above the trees. Another island causeway, a bird sanctuary and more beaut beaches are at Arousa Island about 25 minutes' away, reachable this time by a car carriageway. It's well worth a wander around its sands and old fishermen's houses during the day, then staying on into the evening for a dinner of paella, salmon or other local dishes from one of the many excellently priced restaurants. Villagarcía de Arosa eight road kilometres away is a place for parties, with regular festivals in all seasons including the annual carnival early in the year, a music festival in June, a water festival in August and another festival dedicated to tasty clams, held for a couple of weeks each August. Province capital Pontevedra is about 35 minutes' drive away.
